Act 5 Scene 3 Brooke, Emily, Marissa and Matt

Summary Macbeths thanes are abandoning him, the English army is approaching his castle and lady Macbeth has become ill with guilt. Macbeth tricks himself into believing he has nothing to fear and prepares for battle.

Guilt Destroys (Part B) The major theme of “guilt destroys” is presented in this scene. Lady Macbeth has grown mad with guilt and she has become increasingly unstable. Macbeth has been riddled with problems regarding his crimes and as a result of this, his reign as king is coming to an end. (continues the theme)

Suspense is built Suspense is built when Macbeth’s thanes flee from his castle and when the English army approaches. The audience is made aware that the reign of Macbeth is coming to an end. “Bring me no more reports; let them fly all; Till Birnam wood remove to Dunsinane I cannot taint with fear.”

Atmosphere This scene creates an atmosphere of darkness by showing how far Macbeth has fallen from power and how much of Lady Macbeth’s mind has been lost to the guilt of the murder.

Plot development Thanes Flee Lady Macbeth loses her mind English army approaches Macbeth readies himself for battle This scene sets up the final battle and shows the audience that Macbeth has truly lost everything and has been overcome with guilt and gone mad with power.

Imagery (Part C) Macbeth: “canst thou not minister to a mind diseased, Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow, Raze out the written troubles of the brain, And with some sweet oblivious antidote Cleanse the stuff’d bosom of that perilous stuff Which weighs upon the heart” Macbeth is using imagery to describe how Lady Macbeth has completely lost her mind due the memory of the murder The Theme is developed through imagery

Foreshadowing Macbeth: “I have lived long enough: my way of life is fallen into the sear, the yellow leaf and that which should accompany old age…” line Macbeth is saying that he has lived long enough, foreshadowing that he is going to die in coming scenes.

Foreshadowing Macbeth: “I’ll fight, till from my bones my flesh be hack’d. give me my armour” line Foreshadowing the decapitation of Macbeth
