Lesson 11 Reciprocal & Multiplicative Inverse-Order of Operations –Identifying Multiplication & Addition If one fraction is the inverted form of another fraction, each of the fractions is said to be the RECIPROCAL of the other fraction. For example: 3/2 is the reciprocal of 2/3 -4/11 is the reciprocal of -11/4 1/4 is the reciprocal of 4 -5 is the reciprocal of -1/5 1/0 is MEANINGLESS and therefore ZERO is the ONLY real number which DOES NOT have a RECIPROCAL. If a number is multiplied by its reciprocal the PRODUCT is the number 1.

Lesson 11 continued Definition of Reciprocal or Multiplicative Inverse For any nonzero real number a, the RECIPROCAL, or MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE, of the number is 1/a. ORDER OF OPERATIONS Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally. PEMDAS
