What happened On April 18 at 5:15, San Francisco was hit with one of the worst natural disasters in the United States. This earthquake destroyed 490 city blocks, 25,000 buildings, made over 250,000 homeless and killed between 450 and 700. Frequency Earthquakes occur in California almost daily. Most are so small (1-2 Richter scale) that they are not felt. Earthquakes occur in California almost daily. Duration This earthquake only lasted one whole minute but it kicked ass This earthquake only lasted one whole minute but it kicked ass Fire engulfs the Call Building

Extent Although most of California could feel the earthquake, the brunt of the impact was felt in San Francisco. Although most of California could feel the earthquake, the brunt of the impact was felt in San Francisco. And boom goes the dynamite

Speed of onset Back in 1906, they did not have the technology we have today, so they could not predict the arrival of this quake. Back in 1906, they did not have the technology we have today, so they could not predict the arrival of this quake.

Spatial Dispersion Now scientist can stuydy fault lines, where earthquakes are likely to happen. Now scientist can stuydy fault lines, where earthquakes are likely to happen.

Temporal Spacing Because earthquakes of this magnitude don’t happen very often, this was a random event. Because earthquakes of this magnitude don’t happen very often, this was a random event.
