Do Now: Quiz (10 quiz pts.)  Please put away all books and notes.  On the slips provided, please place a proper heading.  Define the words “describe” and “theme” exactly the way we did in class. Hand in the slips.

Objectives:  The students will be able to write QNTs in order to describe the theme of a poem.  The students will justify their assertion of the theme with at least 3 instances of support from the text.

Review: Anchors and QNTs  Academic Vocabulary  Describe  Theme  Justify  Quote  Note  Thought

Focus Lesson: Tell the Teach  Turn to p. 745 in Elements…  Using the process we studied in class this week, guide the teacher step by step as to how to write a QNT on the theme of this poem. Start with telling him to turn to page 745. Continue by telling him that in order for him to earn full credit, he must be able to… Proceed from there.

Focus Lesson: “Harlem”  Divide into small groups of 3. Turn your desks so they face each other.  Turn to page 754 in Elements…  Previewing  As a group, look at the title and pictures (if any).  Make some notes about the possible themes.  Reading  Select one person to the entire poem through using a 6-inch voice.  Watch for lines which contain instances or suggestions of the theme. Keep the title and pictures in mind.  Review  Identify the line which relates to the theme.  Write a QNT.  Report out and hand in. Make sure to include all names and date.
