One of the 19 th century’s best American artists He wanted to capture the real He started making prints for a lithographer at 19 He then became a magazine illustrator In 1862 he painted scenes of the civil War

Homer enjoyed scenes of daily life and leisure

He painted swimmers, sailors, croquet players and farm workers

He illustrated the Civil War as a magazine illustrator

Homer escaped to the Caribbean painted tropical scenes

Homer loved to watch storms

He bought a house in Maine and converted a barn into a home and studio

In 1881 a turning point came when he spent time in an English fishing village on the north Sea
