THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK The main scientific goals of the experiment are: * studies of CR spectrum in the energy range 1E18 - 1E19 eV, * studies of EAS in the knee region * monitoring single muon rate (space weather and atmospheric effects). Educational impact: ● introduction of modern physics to young enthusiasts, ● contact with modern technologies (both teachers and students), EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

Educational impact: ● introduction of modern physics to young enthusiasts, ● contact with modern technologies (both teachers and students), ● a way to get financial support for the Project. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK The main scientific goal of the project are studies of extremely high energy cosmic rays. There are above 30 high schools in Lodz involved in the Project. UHE CR Events would hit detectors in a few schools. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Examples of simulated events. Trigger conditions for UHE registrations: 1. min. 2 (out of 4) detectors hit in one unit 2. min. 3 units fulfil condition 1. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Simulated 1 year of registration above eV We expect about 400 EAS per year to be registered. (~1 per day) For 30 units (schools): EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Simulated showers and their localizations For 30 units (schools): distributions of 500 EAS for different primary energies EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Simulated showers and their localizations For 30 units (schools): distributions of 500 EAS for different primary energies Distributions of   10 = log 10 N e (localized) - log 10 N e (simulated) EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK The 4 detectors array in each school would register showers in the knee region with rate ~1/minute. One can study: ● shape of energy spectrum, ● angular distribution, ● anizotropy (celestial and galactic coordinates), ● decoherence curve (repeating Maze's experiment). EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Recording single detector counting rate allows for studies of: ● correlations with activity of the Sun and geomagnetic events (space weather), ● the state of atmosphere, ● atmospheric effects (e.g. electric field, thunderstorm clouds), ● correlation with temperature and atmospheric pressure. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Educational impact: ● young enthusiasts in the Lab EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Educational impact: ● a way to get financial support for the Project Meeting in the Town Hall EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK The Project is planned to include about 30 schools. Now we have about 150 students interested in the Project. We organized them in several groups. In 2004 the first stage: 10 schools. We received about 60-67K Euro for 2004 from Authorities of the City of Lodz via Department of Education of the City Council K Euro for materials, rest for education and training. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

EPOG, CERN, Nov We found a lot of problems to use public money for our project: tenders, non-standard use of funds etc.

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Now, many problems are solved, but the financial year is about to finish. (not all of expected funds can be used, some are still not available). EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK GPS: Motorola M12+Timing with Oncore Timing2000 antenna (135 Euro/item) (1PPS signal with accuracy better than 10 ns) EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK Detector: ● 1cm thick plastic scintillator ● WSLE fibres ● 1 photomultiplier per 1 m 2 EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

THE ROLAND MAZE PROJECT - SCHOOL-BASED EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWER NETWORK 2 tiles 10cm x 12cm x 0.5cm made in Protvino form 1cm thick detector. We register each muon passing through detector. EPOG, CERN, Nov. 2004

Hands on CERN events in Lodz In 2004 we had 2 events of HoC. Each had about 40 participants (age 14-19). EPOG, CERN, Nov Events were animated by prof. J. Turnau from Cracow - IFJ Some physics teachers took part. 3 staff from our Institute, 3 PhD students 2 graduate students were involved, too.

Hands on CERN events in Lodz Events took place at 2 different schools. Participants were from about 12 schools (most of them are involved in CR Project). EPOG, CERN, Nov Events started at 10am and ended about 3pm with one 30 minutes break. First part: ● introduction to high energy physics, ● introduction to the studied problem in HoC event (how many basic particles are, relation to cosmology) ● instruction to the animation program

Hands on CERN events in Lodz EPOG, CERN, Nov Second part: ● Study of Z0 decays ● Summary of results and conclusions. PC like computers with MSWindows and McIntosh with MSWindows - like system were used. PC type computers with MSWindows are the most popular computers at schools in Poland. At lab we use Linux at PCs, and the HoC animation was not working correctly (might be that we have not used properly the software like plugins, applets etc.)
