ANDS and its Services Phenomics Data & Informatics Workshop 2010, Friday, 23rd April 2010

Australian National Data Service (ANDS)  An initiative of the Australian Government being conducted as part of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy ($A24M) and the Super Science Initiative ($A48M)  A collaboration between Monash University, the Australian National University and CSIRO  Operations nodes: Melbourne, Canberra ….  About 40 staff, and growing  “More researchers re-using more data more often”

Australian Research Data Commons

4 What does ANDS provide?  Online Services  ANDS infrastructure to support data registration, identification, publication, classification, etc  Expertise and information  consultancy  recommendations, policy, and advice  capability building  Information sharing, sharing experience  Resourcing  Community infrastructure projects  Institutional change  Funding for data activities, infrastructure development  Policy advocacy

Supporting discovery and re-use

Create/Capture  Adding metadata is done most cheaply and effectively as close as possible to point of creation/capture  Treloar/Wilkinson, DOI /eScience  ANDS funding $17M of projects to improve data capture  $12M with institutions  $5M thematically

Store  ANDS doesn’t do storage, but it cares that it happens well  Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research a driver here  Working with institutional and national data stores  Tight integration with Australian Research Collaboration Services and new National Data Fabric

Describe  Information for discovery  Information for determination of value  Information for access  Information for re-use  Notes:  Ideally all of these should be available at discovery time  Driven by desire to enable re-use ands.org.au8

Identify  Persistent identifiers for data provide level of indirection to assist with longterm access  Handles (based on CNRI infrastructure)  Identify my Data service now available  human and machine interfaces  Digital Object Identifiers for data  ANDS has just joined DataCite consortium  Available soon

Register  Feeds ANDS Registry for discovery and re-use  Supports  OAI-PMH harvest  Preferred format RIF-CS  Can also transform from other XML schemas  XML GET  RIF-CS, other XML  Manual entry (Register My Data service)

Discover  Use Registry info to generate richly interlinked web pages for spidering  Range of other discovery interfaces on development roadmap  spatial  temporal  image 

Access  Direct link to open-access data  Link to datastore with its own access controls  register/login only for open access  register/login for restricted access  Contact information for how to get data  Metadata only (no access)  variations in how people feel about this

Exploit  Could also be called Use  Focused on the kinds of things that can be built on top of data once it is re-usable  mashups  data fusion  cross-disciplinary visualisation  ANDS planning to fund activity here under Applications program

New Services development  Needs analysis process Nov/Dec 2009   Draft Services Roadmap (ARDC Core and Applications) released for consultation March 2010   Services Roadmap finalised late April 2010  Process of commissioning commences May 2010
