There will be countless times that I need to get your attention during the school year. The signal for this will be my hands going up. Your reaction, paying attention, includes the following: 1- Stop talking. 2- Stop working. 3- Put your hands up to signal to others that might not see that it is time to stop and pay attention. In order to practice, we will begin with an activity to mix things up. Here’s how it works: 1- Walk around the room with a hand up until you find someone else with a hand up. 2- Give that person a fist bump and introduce yourself. 3- Whoever has longer hair begins by introducing themselves and telling what middle school they attended. 4- After both have introduced themselves and told which middle school they attended, say “Thanks for sharing” and find someone else. Note the letter on your desk. I will assign partners to begin. The topic that will be discussed: Steps: Timed Pair Share What was one of your favorite t.v. shows or books when you were a child? 1- Introduce yourself. 2- A talks while B (and C) listen (keep it G-rated). If person A ends early, B (and C) ask questions (i.e. “Who was your favorite character?”) 3- The listener(s) ends by making a positive remark (i.e. “Thanks for sharing.” or “I enjoyed your discussion of ________.”) 4- Person B (then C) talks while others listen, same as above.

As a group, create a list of the top three things that a new student would need to know to succeed in U.S. History. Put this on a piece of paper and turn it in when done.
