Creativity – Session 2 CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION

Aim of last session: To be creative in our own teaching styles and behaviours in order to motivate and engage the boys we find most challenging.

Reflection and post twilight activity – how did you get on? CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION How did you change your style or behaviour in the classroom to help motivate boys? Which class did you try this with? What were the results? Did it work/not work? Did it lead to any questions or issues?

Aims To be creative in our own teaching methods, activities and resources in order to motivate and engage the boys we find most challenging. To consider how we can promote resilience and ambition. CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION

What do the boys say? CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION We asked a selection of male students: What are the myths about boys/teaching boys? What do you think works in the classroom for boys? What do you feel doesn’t work well in the classroom for boys? (There’s a page in your booklet for notes)

What do the boys say? CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION Have a chat on your tables about the feedback from the boys: Are you surprised by any of the comments? Do any of the comments link to our last session (“It ‘aint what you do…”)

What do the teachers say? CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION We asked a selection of teachers to share some resources/activities with you that they have found successful. As you watch – please do make notes in the table in your booklet by considering how you could use/adapt the ideas presented by our colleagues.

What do the experts say? CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION

What do the experts say? Resilience CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION experiences self-esteem proactive relationships success collaboration modelling control

What do the experts say? Ambition CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION Boys Without Ambitions Christopher Hutton

What do the experts say? Ambition CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION read article; highlight key points discuss key points from your article with partner -Do you agree with the authors’ ideas of what impacts upon male ambition? -Could these also be applied to girls?

Lacking ambition in boys: our response in the classroom CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION from both articles, make a list of the factors impacting on boys’ ambition which you consider to be meaningful for each factor, consider what teachers could do in the classroom to mitigate against this – own ideas / ideas from colleagues – DAW / SCM ideas – points from other documents

Post Twilight Activity CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION The next half hour is planning time for your TLE work with your TLE partner. This time should be used for co-planning. Please make sure that in this time you also organise a date and time for a peer observation (see below). Before the Summer Half Term Break, please ensure that you have had the opportunity to observe your TLE partner and that they have observed you This will contribute to your Appraisal at the end of the year Other points: - the observation does not need to be for a full hour - notes do not have to be taken as it is the post observation conversation that is crucial

TLE Sharing Event CHALLENGE – EVALUATION – CREATIVITY – CLARITY – FOUNDATIONS – COLLABORATION Meet colleagues from other areas – social aspect! Brilliant way of sharing ideas across subjects Two possible ways of getting involved: - come along and informally chat to colleagues about their TLE work - share your own work informally by having a ‘desk’ Diary Date: THURSDAY 26 MARCH from 3.30pm – 4.15pm
