Chapter 15 Section 1 World War I

Nationalism The love for one’s country.

Militarism The use of strong armies and threat of force to gain power.

Alliances An agreement between two countries to help each other in a time of need. Example: If one country is attacked its ally will help it fight back.

U-Boats Short for a German term that means underwater boat.

Armistice An agreement to stop fighting.

Treat of Versailles Peace agreement that was signed at the end of World War I.

Giuseppe Garibaldi An Italian nationalist that led the movement to unify the Italian states.

Otto von Bismarck Led the efforts to unify Germany.

Archduke Francis Ferdinand Heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne He was shot and killed by the Serbs and this led to the beginning of WWI.

President Woodrow Wilson President of the United States during WWI. Asked congress to declare war on Germany.

The Start of World War I Serbians wanted control of Bosnia and Herzogovina. June of 1914 Serbs shot the heir to the Austro- Hungarian throne. As a result, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. In August of 1914, Germany declared war on Russia.
