Who Came & Where Did They Settle? Similar immigrant waves on both sides of the river: German, Irish & English dominated on eastside. On the west banks of the river, immigrants were involved in mercantile; on the east they primarily farmed. On the east side and throughout S. Where & How Does the International Institute Fit? We were founded in 1919 and have been serving immigrants in Metro East since our first year of service. Pictured here are Mexicans who worked in the Illinois Stockyards & lived in freight cars. Our volunteers would spend a day a week traveling to conduct English classes with this “floating student body.” Immersion Investment Inclusion
