The Joy of Goodbye John 16:5-33

Why is it a good thing that Jesus left His disciples, and is not with us today?

I. Jesus’ departure to the Father is necessary for the Holy Spirit to come and do His work The Spirit can only be sent by Jesus after He leaves (5-7)

Now I am going to Him who sent Me, yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ John 16:5 Simon Peter asked Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for you.” John 13:36-37 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” John 14:5

It’s a bad world, an incredibly bad world It’s a bad world, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any pleasure of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people are the Christians – and I am one of them.
