The Gospel of MARK

Quiz See what you already know: html html

Writing Style The Gospel of Mark was writing to please a poor, Gentile group of people. Basically people who do not believe in Judaism. It’s shorter then the other Gospels because there was some loss of information and also there was a lot of editing within his Gospel.

 There are a couple of major themes in Mark’s Gospel: ◦ Messianic Secret: Mark makes Jesus a mysterious and secretive being throughout his writings. ◦ The Death of Jesus: Even though all of the Gospel writers wrote about Jesus’ death on the cross. Mark goes in depth about it and makes it the main part of his Gospel.

 The author of Mark’s Gospel is not actually Mark himself.  It was actually composed of several writers which included:  Papias, Irenaeus, Clemet of Alexandria, and many more

 Most scholars date the Gospel of Mark to sometime between 60 AD and 80 AD. It was probably the earliest of the four gospels and a source used by Matthew and Luke.

 Mark was mostly written for Gentiles but more specifically it was intended for Rome and Nero's persecutions ◦ Reasons why it originated in Rome  The audience is clearly Gentile because Mark often explains Jewish terms and customs  The audience seems to have experienced persecution  Peter is believed to have spent the last part of his life in Rome  Association with the Roman church would explain its authoritative position in the early church
