Pacific People in New Zealand

Where are the Pacific Islands?

 There has been a long history of interaction between Pacific People and Aotearoa/New Zealand Through…

Sport

War

Education

Employment

Struggles?  Keeping ones native Island culture alive in a European world.

 It’s hard for Island born parents to pass on their culture and traditions to their children as the majority of them are born in New Zealand and are ‘Europeanised’.  60% of PI’s are born in New Zealand

How Many Pacific Islanders are in NZ?  According to the last census taken in 2006 there are 266,000 in 4.1 Million Pacific Islanders in NZ  7% of the entire population  Canterbury holds 13.1% of all Pacific Islanders in NZ  What provience do you think holds the most?

 Auckland with 66.9%

The Pacific Islands are broken into 3 sections:

Fiji is in Melanesia and links into the film ‘No.2’

 Pacific Island traditions seen in No.2  Kava…?  Religion…?  Food…?  Big Family gatherings…?

Kava  The Basics: Kava, also known as yaquona or grog, is a mild analgesic, diuretic and stress reliever. It is prepared using the root of the piper methstyicum plant, part of the pepper family. Drinking it will make your body lethargic, tongue tingly and head fuzzy. A feeling of “yes, all is right in the world” will pervade. Although non- alcoholic, it is the social lubricant, the deal sealer, the friend maker. Where there is a village, there is kava

Religion  Catholic Missionaries:  1827 Hawaii  1836 Tahiti  1837 Wallis and Futuna  1838 New Zealand  1842 Tonga  1843 New Caledonia  1844 Fiji  1845 Samoa

Food Traditional Island foods such as raw fish, Taro and spit roast pig are all shown in the film ‘No.2’ to give us an idea of the kind of food they eat during celebration or any special occasion.

Family Gatherings  Island people are known for having big family gatherings. The family, both immidiate and extended, are all very close as seen in ‘No.2’. Why might this be?
