MAE Curriculum Update G. Thompson April 13, 2012

Curriculum Update New Courses Surveys Grade Distribution Laboratory Safety Future Direction

New Courses MAE 102 Introduction to MAE Design Equivalent to ENGR 102 Not a required course. Provide students at the freshman level aerospace and mechanical-related projects. Provide same basic ENGR 102 requirements of programming (MATLAB) and team design environment. Integrate aerospace and mechanical terminology and skills. Hands-on projects CAD Introduction to machine components and structures

New Courses MAE 271/371 – MAE Design 1/2 Provide a path for students to work with senior capstone design students and receive credit towards graduation. Two courses act as one technical elective. Courses not required. MAE 271 at sophomore level, 1 credit hour. Provide introduction to senior design and allow students to provide basic support such as CAD. MAE 371 at junior level, 2 credit hours. Provide higher level support to senior design students and to mentor 271 students. Students able to select different capstone sections between 271 and 371. Low enrollment and instructor consent limitations to attract motivated students.

New Courses MAE 497 – Research Not a new course but sections opened. Provide undergraduate students the pathway to do research and work with graduate students and faculty. Recognizes student’s work on their transcript. Provides faculty member a path to include students in unfunded research. Work must be defined in a syllabus with defined output.

Grade Distribution Waiting on Chairman’s summary. Examining a grading guideline. Should we specify a grade distribution?

Laboratory Safety Continuing with undergraduate training. Developing on-line material to automate the training and quiz. Planning to deploy Fall Graduate students and researchers training through EH&S. Laboratory areas being evaluated monthly. Developed control charts to track improvements. Provide feedback and solution paths to laboratory users. Positive response from researchers. Proactive approach is receiving positive feedback from EH&S. Recent State inspection.
