Tracy H. Aitken, NBCT Leadership Growth in VCU’s Educational Leadership program.

Part one: Growth & Development Educational Leadership-the 1st Year. What kind of learner am I? What type of leader am I becoming? What are my goals for the coming year?

Learning Growth Spring Semester, 2014 Fall Semester, 2014 Summer Semester, 2013

Summer, 2013 EDLP 700 was a great introduction to some of the faculty, the new cohort, and to a fresh look at our leadership preferences (LCI) and personality styles (MBTI). We also got to know Lencioni and the team well, indeed!

Fall, 2013 EDLP 702/703 & 715 were a challenging & humbling combination of classes. Scholarly writing and statistics instruction opened my eyes to the rigors of academic scholarship.

Spring, 2014 Lots of thought provoking ideas and practices presented in both the legal and ethics classes with plenty of opportunity for application.

7 Part Two: Putting it All Together 1 Personality & Leadership Style  Empathy with the victim spurs action.  Sequence allows for a methodical approach to problem-solving.  Confluence frees up think outside the box and be energized with the possibilities.

8 Learning from Bolman & Deal 2 B&D’s Symbolic Framework A school’s success depends on its culture. Students must first feel safe and included. They must feel as they are important to the mission of the school. Students will be loyal to a place where they feel they play an important role.

9 It’s all about the data. 3 Reporting & Collecting Data Research shows that schools must collect tangible and clearly defined data on bullying incidents. This data needs to provide a starting point for bully-prevention program implementation. It then should be collected as benchmark data for program evaluation.

10 Policy Implementation 4 Transformation Build support. Planning group. Map the policy. Gather resources. Implement. Collect data. Evaluate. Revise. Subsequent generations.

11 Ethical Considerations 5 Take Time for Ethics Spangler-I’m an individualist-consider each person; may be indecisive Ethical Reasoning Am I applying a rule? Good of one vs. all? Who is negatively impacted? Costs & benefits? Maintaining relationships. All points of view heard?

12 Part Three: Effective leadership What do I need to know about myself when serving in a leadership capacity? 2. How can my knowledge of how organizations work influence my decisions? 3. What types of data? How to collect? Data analysis. Report. Use. 4. What type of policy works best? Implement wisely. 5. What are the ethical considerations?

13 Future Growth. Goal 3-Dig deeper. 413 Goal 1-Writing Road Maps. 2 Goal 2-Blog more. Positive Change-Delegation!

Tracy H. Aitken, NBCT Thank-you.
