MATHS 102 Mathematics 2 Module 0 Models & Functions Lecture 1 Welcome to Mathematics

Welcome to MATHS 102 My name is Bill Barton I am the Course Convenor The other lecturers are: David Godfrey Ye Yoon Hong

My aims for this course are...  to prepare you to take MATHS 151 or MATHS 108, and  to help you to get a good grade for this course, and  to rekindle or develop your enthusiasm for mathematics, and  to develop your ability to think mathematically, and to communicate such thoughts to others.

MATHS 102 Lecture 1/0  Administration  Myths About Mathematics  Studying Mathematics  Mathematical Thinking

Administration  When & Where Mon / Tue / Wed / Thu 11.00amClockTower 039 or1.00pmEng 3404 plus a Friday Tutorial (NOT THIS WEEK)  Resources Study Guide Text: Functioning in Mathematics Calculators

Administration  Should You Be Here ? This course is designed for those who sat Bursary Maths (Stats or Calc) and scored less than 55(Calc) or 65(Stat). It covers Yr12 & Yr13 mathematics in a different way - with a focus on Functions and Modelling If you get a B+ pass or better then you are ready to take on MATHS 108 or 151.

Administration  Problems ? Come and see us - see the Study Guide for times and places. We all live in the Maths/Physics building on City Campus.  Student Resource Centre City: Basement of Maths/Physics Building

Administration  Assessment Semester Test10% Four Assignments16%+4% Five Collaboratives10% Final Exam60% plussage  Tutorials Fridays … more later.

Administration  Organisation of the Text Preliminary Notes Lecture Notes Post-Lecture Exercises  What is expected of you –you will take an ACTIVE part in lectures –you will work outside of lectures –you will seek help AND help others

Please raise your hand if...  English is your FIRST language  You have done a Form 7 / Year 13 mathematics course in New Zealand  You did MATHS 101 or the Wellesley Programme last year  You have access to a computer  You have a graphics calculator  You are enjoying this course so far.

Three Exercises  Work together in pairs 1. Three people picked a number of apples and divided them according to their ages. Sione took three more apples than Petra, while David took twice as many as Sione, which gave him eleven more than Petra. How many apples were there in total ? 2. Convince yourself that adding a sequence of consecutive odd numbers starting from 1 will always result in a number which is a perfect square. 3.Explore what happens if you start with any number, square each digit, add the result, then do the same again, and so on.

MATHS 102 Lecture 1/0  Administration  Myths About Mathematics  Studying Mathematics  Mathematical Thinking

Myths about Mathematics  Mathematical Minds  One Best Way  Mathematics is Computation  Logical or Creative ?  Good Mathematics is Fast
