Angelman and Prader Willi Syndromes Hannah Messier and Cecily Fogarty

Background of Angelman Syndrome Discovered in 1965 by Harry Angelman. First called Happy Puppet Syndrome University of Florida Cause of disease was found in 1967

History of Prader Willi Syndrome Genetic disorder on chromosome 15 where 7 genes are not expressed. Discovered by Andrea Prader and Heinrich Willi in 1956.

What happens to those who have Angelman Syndrome Intellectually grows slower than others Mental issues Seizures Walking Talking disabilities Attention issues Hyper Generally Happy Are easily excited

What happens to those with Prader Willi Syndrome Low muscle tone Short stature Small genitalia, hands and feet Cognitive disabilities problem behaviors Chronic feeling of hunger (linked with obesity)

How is Angelman Syndrome Passed on? Caused by an issue with the 15th chromosome Deletion Mutation

How is Prader Willi Syndrome Passed on? Usually the father is the one who was missing the chromosome. Yet it has been reported that some with this disorder have a unique chromosome 15 because both strands come from the mother instead of one strand from the mother and one from the father.
