Number Patterns
Patterns and Sequences We often need to spot a pattern in order to predict what will happen next. The correct name for a pattern of numbers is called a SEQUENCE. The first number in a SEQUENCE is sometimes called the FIRST TERM; the second is the SECOND TERM and so on.
Patterns and Sequences For any pattern it is important to try to spot what is happening before you predict the next number. The first 2 or 3 numbers are rarely enough to show the full pattern - 4 or 5 numbers are best.
1, 2, …… What’s the next number? Patterns and Sequences For any pattern it is important to try to spot what is happening before you can predict the next number. 1, 2, …… What’s the next number?
1, 2, 4,… Patterns and Sequences For any pattern it is important to try to spot what is happening before you can predict the next number. 1, 2, 4,… Did you think the next number was 3?
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 Patterns and Sequences For any pattern it is important to try to spot what is happening before you can predict the next number. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, The rule is to double each number. 32, 64
Patterns and Sequences Look at what is happening from 1 TERM to the next. See if that is what is happening for every TERM. 5, 8, 12, 17, 23, …, … + 3
5, 8, 12, 17, 23, …, … Patterns and Sequences Look at what is happening from 1 TERM to the next. See if that is what is happening for every TERM. 5, 8, 12, 17, 23, …, … + 3 + 3 X

Patterns and Sequences Now try these patterns: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, ___, ___ 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, ___, ___ 1000, 100, 10, 1, ___, ___ 5, 15, 45, 135, ____, ______ 23 27 4 2 .1 .01 405 1,215
Look at these number sequences. What is the rule? +10 30 40 50 60 70 80 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- +3 17 20 23 26 29 32 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -7 48 41 34 27 20 13
What are the missing numbers in each of these sequences? +25 50 75 100 125 150 175 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- +20 30 50 70 90 110 130 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -5 196 191 186 181 176 171 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -10 306 296 286 276 266 256
Find my rule. For these sequences there are 2 maths functions! 3 7 15 31 63 127 x2 +1 x2 -1 2 3 5 9 17 33
