Planning a Career Chapter 19

Studying Careers Occupation- a task or series of tasks that is performed to provide a good or service. Career- a goal in life that is fulfilled through an occupation or series of occupations. Career Planning- the process of studying careers, assessing yourself in terms of careers, and making decisions about a future career.

Finding Information Places you can find information about different careers. Occupational Outlook Quarterly The Occupational Outlook Handbook Career World The Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidence Government employment office- These are tax-supported offices that help people find jobs and that provide information about careers.

Getting Insight into Work Career information interview- a planned discussion with a worker to find out about the work that person does, the preparation necessary for that career, and the person’s feelings about his or her career.

Getting Insight into Yourself Mobility- is the willingness and ability of a person to move to where jobs are located. Values- the things that are important to you in life. Talent-is a natural, inborn aptitude to do certain things. Ability- the quality of being able to perform a mental or physical task.

Making Career Decisions Tentative Career Decision- a decision that is subject to change or modification as new information is received.

Steps to follow when making a career decision Gather as much information as you can. Analyze what you have learned about careers and about yourself. Think about different plans of action and what might happen if you follow each one. Select what seems to be the best plan of action and follow it Evaluate your career decisions from time to time.
