AIM: To understand how ‘Gender Inequality’ can be measured. Key Terms: HDI, GEM, GDI

HDI (Human Development Index) A statistic used to rank countries by level of human development to indicate standards of living. Uses data on- life expectancy (longevity), adult literacy (education) and GDP per capita (standard of living).

GEM (Gender Empowerment Measure) Measures inequalities between men's and women's opportunities in a country. It combines inequalities in three areas: political participation (% parliamentary seats), economic participation (% management positions), and power over economic resources (PPP $US).

GDI (Gender-related Development Index) Aims to show the inequalities between men and women in life expectancy (Health), adult literacy (education) and GDP (Economy). In most countries, women are never treated as well as men, regardless of whether the country is MEDC or LEDC.
