All Muslims follow the five pillars or beliefs of the Muslim religion. Section 2: Building a Muslim Empire Following the death of Muhammad there were disputes over his successor. The Umayyad caliphate established itself and grew powerful. It was later replaced by the Abbasids, who established a rich legacy of art and culture.
