CULTURAL DIFFUSION AND GLOBALIZATION Sixth Grade Geography

CULTURAL DIFFUSION  Cultural diffusion : when different cultures intermingle and influence each other.  Examples: Language, Religion, Foods, Clothing styles, art forms, and societal beliefs.

DISCUSSION  What is the difference between assimilation and cultural diffusion?

CULTURAL DIFFUSION  New traditions can replace older traditions and practices are lost. This is a negative impact. 

GLOBALIZATION  Globalization : the world’s economies and societies have become increasingly interlinked and interdependent on each other.  People, goods and services, and money all flow more easily across international borders.  Governments are joining together in trade organizations and political unions, like the European Union. This alliance of 27 European countries provides for barrier-free trade and open borders among all its member states.

GLOBALIZATION AND COMMUNICATION  Ideas are also moving across borders thanks to the many developments in communication technologies.  Transatlantic Cable: system of undersea cables that made communication across the Atlantic Ocean possible.  1830’s- The first major breakthrough in communication technology was the telegraph.  Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.  1990’s- Internet becomes popular.

THINK-PAIR-SHARE  1.) How has the internet allowed for global communication?  2.) How has social media networking affected global communication?  VIDEO: com/watch?v=3SuNx0 UrnEo com/watch?v=3SuNx0 UrnEo
