EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE UNIT AND SKULL ROTATION ON CORTICAL BONE THICKNESS IN CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IMAGES Nascimento TBMS, do Nascimento MCC, Almeida SM; Haiter-Neto F, Jacobs R Department of Oral Diagnosis, Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become a popular image modality in the evaluation of various applications in dentistry, therefore it use need to be constantly evaluated. In periodontics, the buccal and lingual cortical bone regions are often evaluated to avoid the risk of resorption of cortical bone margin in cases of immediate implant placement. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate different protocols in relation to the arc rotation and the position of the skull in CBCT images for evaluating buccal and lingual cortical bone margin. PURPOUSE

MATERIAL AND METHODS After approval of the study under protocol S55619 number, preserved dentate dry human skulls were selected. A sample of 11 skulls with 59 intact anterior teeth were included. The thicknesses were visually classified in absent, fine, and thick. Fig. 1:. Plastic beads were glued on lingual and buccal alveolar bone margin in order to standardize the region to be evaluated. Fig. 2: Three cervical spines were placed on skull. This set was placed in a round basket, and a frontal support was used for immobilization of the skull during scanning. Fig. 3: Acquisition Protocol

RESULTS CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the CBCT showed disagreement compared to the visualization in the skulls on evaluation of thin anterior cortical bone for all protocols used, except for lingual cortical bone in total rotation. The diagnosis is more difficult for thin cortical and easier for absent cortical bone.
