Presentation transcript:

The BioEYES Activity  Excellent hands-on experience for learning numerous concepts central to all science, including: 1.The experimental process 2.Importance of good note-taking/observational skills 3.Importance of scientific research/cooperation  With physical/visual reinforcement, students learn several key biological concepts including: 1.External fertilization 2.Embryological development 3.Mendelian genetics

The Modern Biology Lab  Being paired up with Shirley Cox was FUN!  It was wonderful to be back in a laboratory after many years away  I was energized for research by the numerous recent advances in techniques/technologies that are used in today’s labs  Lab activities, particularly the bacterial transformation, are potential exercises to utilize in the classroom in order to teach/reinforce concepts in cell biology

Pedagogy of BioEYES Sessions  It was very interesting to hear how flexible and adaptable this project is to various ages and abilities of students.  Inquiry-based, hands-on activities in the classroom undoubtedlywill enhance understanding/retention of difficult concepts.  Ease of activity combined with “wow” factor will likely inspire students of all capabilities to pursue careers in science and/or medicine.

Tours of Facility/Labs  Increased awareness of the types of research being done at the University of Notre Dame (expanded significantly over the years, especially the availability of projects for HS/college students)  Reminded me how much fun and interactive scientific research can be! (Anyone have an opening?)
