The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 1

 In Denmark the number of forensic patients has increased markedly during the last decades  Politicians and the media have increased their focus on escaping and dangerous patients The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 2

 In Denmark most of the forensic patients are treated in General Psychiatry  The way in which services are provided differ - and only in one of the Regions are all forensic patients treated in a forensic setting  The Forensic Evaluations are mainly made in four centres – Three of these centres are connected to ”medium secure services” The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 3

 Despite a tendency of describing Forensic Psychiatry as a subspecialty, it IS NOT in Denmark a formal subspecialty  The formal education in Forensic Psychiatry is therefore described (only) in the programs of General Psychiatry The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 4

 One year of introductory training  Four years of clinical training in General Psychiatry  ½ year of training in neurology  Mandatory courses (general and specific courses) including a cource of Forensic Psychiatry  Training in researching  Basic education in psychotherapy The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 5

 Supervised treatment of two forensic patients (1-3 years) in inpatient and outpatient settings  Reports to the public prosecutor (or reports on involuntary treatment) and one Forensic court report  ”Focused experience” in a Forensic Department (maximum 4 weeks) is possible The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 6

 3 days in the Forensic Department participating in meetings on the wards, receiving lessons in specific topics concerning assesment, treatment, reports and criminal law (usually 2-5 trainees at the same time)  Later on individually arranged supervision of a court report

 Arranged by The Clinic of Forensic Psychiatry in Copenhagen  3 days covering the topics: › criminal law, involuntary treatment, treatment of the forensic patients in general, treatment in high security setting, treatment of sexual offenders, court reports psychological tests and the Medico-legal council The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 8

 ”knowledge of the penal law related to psychiatry and knowledge of the laws of involuntary treatment”

 Lacking the formal requirements we learn while working in Forensic Psychiatry AND  Have made an informal ”Expert-course”

 (Arranged by the Forensic Section of The Danish Psychiatric Association since 2003). 4 courses of 3 days on: › Forensic organization › Law and assignment › International forensic aspects (given in London) › Treatment of the forensic patients The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry 11
