Topic 7: Product Development

There are certain items as humans that require for our basic survival. Some of these needs would include: Shelter Food Water Clothing Some of these needs require production of materials and the transport of materials over long distances.

There are many “wants” which exist in our society that affect the production of materials. Some of these wants are driving the global markets such as oil, technological advancement, and transportation. Many wants often inflate the global economy but tend to be reduced when global production economy slows. One such example would be travel.

Custom Production - Made as one of a kind (e.g., hand- knitted clothing, a house, designer jewellery, boats. Produced in limited quantities (e.g., class picture, baseball bats for pro athletes, clothing - school reunion t-shirt, day planner for the school) Mass Production - Mass produced (e.g., cars, clothing, boots, appliances, treats, food, books, computers) Production is Highly influenced by market forces (e.g., particular clothing styles, candy and candy packaging, jewellery) Subject to rigorous quality control practices (e.g., food, aircraft parts, building materials, medical equipment and supplies)

What is the difference between custom production and mass production? Provide a list of three products that are created by the custom process and three products that are mass produced. Identify 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages for both custom and mass production. Assignment 11
