BRIEF and SPECIFICATION for IMPROVING the PRODUCT write a detailed design brief for improving the selected product in some way; develop and justify an objective design specification; 1 X A3 SHEET or PP 8 MARKS

PAGE 6 BRIEF AND SPECIFICATION THE BRIEF IS ‘BRIEF’ AND CLEARLY IDENTIFIES AN AREA TO BE IMPROVED. THE SPECIFICATION IS CLEARLY SUB DIVIDED INTO CATEGORIES THE JUSTIFICATIONOF EACH SPECIFICATION POINT IS VERY CLEARLY IDENTIFIED 9PT 9 pt is a little too small to read! THE CLEAR ANNOTATED DIGITAL IMAGE IS A VERY GOOD FEATURE FOR THE NEW SPECIFCATION THERE IS ROOM TO MAKE THE TOP TEXT BOX 12PT MOVING THE TITLES UP COULD MAKE SPACE FOR LARGER TEXT BOXES AND 10PT ON THE SPECIFICATION CHART

DESIGN SPECIFICATION DESIGN BRIEF PHOTO So far I have spent time analysing the pros and con’s of the conventional plastic cloths peg, I have found that using the product is a difficult, tedious and time consuming product when in use. It is a design that has not changed for hundreds of years and one that I believe has plenty of room for development. My intentions are to improve this product for its intended user. I will be improving how the product functions by making it quicker and easier too use, making it easier to store and handle and overall improving the quality of life for the user. This will involve developing the opening and closing mechanism, improving the ergonomics making it easier to handle buy adapting features that make it easier to hold and also Spring bends out of shape easily PHOTO Not very comfortable to hold Delicate shaft that snaps easily DESIGN SPECIFICATION Water collects here which then pours onto clothing FUNCTIONAL JUSTIFICATION AESTHETICS JUSTIFICATION Needs to be quick and easy too use: so that as less time as possible is wasted when using the product Needs to be easily used by all ages: by being not too tight and stiff and also not be too heavy to handle. It needs to be used by the very young and the very old with ease. Must hold all types of clothing on a washing line in all conditions: so that clothes do not need to be re-washed after falling on the floor Must be have the ability of being stored easily when not in use: lots are needed so storing them needs to be quick and easy Needs to look like the conventional clothes peg: so that the user knows how to use it straight away or with a little information. Needs appeal to the user: By having innovative design, it needs to break away from the old boring clothes peg and step into a new era by looking better in the garden whilst still looking easy too use. Needs too have attractive mix of colours: e.g. parts are different colours to show off different functions. Needs to have a garden theme: so that it does not look out of place in the garden. MATERIALS JUSTIFICATION COST JUSTIFICATION Must be light weight and durable: so that it is easy to hold and value for money. Waterproof: so that it will not deteriorate when in contact with wet items of clothing. Must not leave a mark on the product: the finishes (e.g. colour) must not run or stain clothing. Must be strong and shatterproof: so that it can last a long time in outside conditions. Must not snap or bend out of shape: which would deem the product un-usable. Must be recyclable and not play a part in global warming: so that the product will appeal to all users. Must be cheap to produce: so that the product can be sold at a low price and will be competitive over other pegs in the market Must be affordable for all users: so that young and old people can buy the product as it is an essential product for any household looking to dry washing outside Must have little cost to the environment: e.g. use recycled materials in the production process so people will be more inclined to buy the product if they know they are not effecting the environment. MANUFACTURING JUSTIFICATION SAFETY JUSTIFICATION Must be quick too manufacture: so that hundreds can be produced in one day. Must be able to be mass produced: so that it can meet high demand because lots of people use clothing pegs everyday. Must provide as many jobs as possible: as a way of helping the economy. Manufacturing methods: Must allow the product to be produced quickly and efficiently Needs to be easily stored and transported in the workplace: so that the business does not have use money in this area of production. Must have no sharp edges: as they could cause damage to the user. Must not be too heavy: so it does not cause damage too the user or people in close proximity. Must not clamp to hard: as this could hurt the user if clamped onto the hand or finger. Must not have loose parts: that could be seen as a choking hazard for young children Must have features that protect the user from harm: e.g. rubber to cover any edges etc. ERGONOMICS JUSTIFICATION MORAL ISSUES JUSTIFICATION Needs to be comfortable to use: because it will be used very often. It must not have features that could cause discomfort too the user: e.g. roof edges that could cause blisters after repeated use. Must be the right size: so that it can be handled easily by all users that need to use it. Needs to have features that allow it to be gripped easily: so that it does not slip out of the users hand when wet. Needs to have the ability to fit on most washing lines: (this may have to be adjustable) not all washing lines are the same so the product must be able to function on all washing lines. Must not exploit workers when being produced: it must abide by the rules of fair trade. Must benefit the economy: by being produced in the UK as a way of providing jobs a causing the economy too grow. Manufacturing process: Must have a manufacturing process that uses as little energy as possible. Must be easily recycled: so that the environment is not effected during its disposal Distribution and sale: the distribution and sale of the product must not effect the environment transportation must be kept to a minimum. labelling: that encourages people to recycle it instead of just throwing it away
