Welcome to Engineering for Information Society Applications

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 Oliver Bond Technical Editor of the NECTAR Information Update Aslib, The Association for Information Management London, UK

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 Telematics Engineering in the 4th FP TAP between ACTS and ESPRIT Vertical applications sectors of TE: e.g. transport, health 3 horizontal sectors: language engineering information engineering telematics engineering 10 TE projects, most completed NECTAR is a TE support action

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 What is Telematics Engineering? That which is common to the development of telematics applications across sectors –requirements engineering –usability engineering –standardisation –legal and ethical issues –technical infrastructure –process re-engineering...

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 Who is NECTAR for? Developers of information society applications, especially in EU research programmes NECTAR’s role is to collect, refine and disseminate information and results from research projects, adding editorial commentary and focused discussion fora NECTAR is a support action, benefiting the whole of EU telematics research, not just the TE Sector.

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 The NECTAR Team NECTAR draws on the strengths of its consortium comprising: Aslib, the Association for Information Management 75 years experience in information handling and processing, 2000 corporate members worldwide Eunet International b.V. Europe’s largest Internet service provider

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR’s Information Refinery Project results are presented in the repository. The Editorial Board provide commentaries on the results which are presented in the Information Update. The commentaries are summarized by the editor. Themes are explored in depth in the electronic journal. Discussion fora offer interaction.

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR’s Repository of Project Results NECTAR hosts results from sector projects, as well as material from relevant projects outside the TE Sector. The Repository holds well over 100 key results from relevant projects, dating from the beginning of the 4th FP. Project summary information is also presented to allow users to make direct contact with the researchers.

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR’s Information Update The commentary on NECTAR covers: policy & management issues engineering & standardisation issues technology & infrastructure issues application & user issues The Update carries reviews of results by the Editorial Board, as well as news of events, publications and policy. Users may also register for a free personalized alerting service.

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR’s electronic journal The journal benefits from an absurdly long title - The European Journal of Engineering for Information Society Applications, so we call it EJEISA. Currently 3 themed issues per year, 4 from January Free at present! Allows us to present themes across projects and sectors, to draw upon different viewpoints: e.g. telework issue Next issues: BPR, virtual organisations, individualization

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR’s discussion fora 4 public fora based on themes of the Information Update 3 private fora so far, on virtual organizations, multimedia access to education & training, standardisation private groups work - exclusivity, focus public groups aren’t working but will be animated by editorial board members

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR and gigabit networking For most of us, kilobit networking has entered our lives. For some of us, megabit networking is already in place. The next challenge is why we are here. The principles of managing telematics projects - of best practice, standardisation, usability, etc. - are still fundamental to both commercial application development and research project management.

The Challenge of Gigabit Networking The Challenge of Gigabit Networking 7-10 June 1999 Lund © NECTAR 1999 NECTAR and the outside world ACTS + TAP + ESPRIT = IST NECTAR’s collection of research a commentary will prove invaluable to those planning and implementing 5th FP projects. The electronic journal will make use of an international editorial board to look at themes of the information society from a global perspective.
