Project Idea 1: Campus Map Current Campus Map: Class schedule: Integrate class schedules to campus map UIUC GIS group has been collecting detailed campus spatial information. o location of each door o Pedestrian path o Contact: Varun Goel and Julie Carlson

Project Idea 2: Social Media Social media (e.g. Twitter) provides an new modality of data to study the complex social/urban systems Many exciting applications have been developed based on such new data sources: o Predict the stock market o Trends Map: o OneMillionTweetMap: o Tracking Hurricane Sandy and Presidential Campaign (by CIGI): Mapping real-time local topic trends o Data source: Twitter Streaming API:

Project Idea 3: Public Safety/Health Map the public emergency and public health events (crime, birth/death, diabetes, etc.), and the local trends and statistics over years Support query according to certain conditions Links: o Current crime map: o o For Chicago:

Project Idea 5: Map Tiles Server Build custom web tiles from OpenStreetMap data (public available) Incorporating the door and pedestrian information UIUC GIS group collected Serving the map request from users (like map service provided by Google Maps and Bing Maps) A sample interactive map based on the developed map server. Course projects: o The project will be divided into four stages, and report of each stage plus lecture related problems considered as four assignments (15% each * 4 = 60%); the first stage starts from end of week3 o The project will be evaluated based on (1) technical innovation, (2) thoroughness of the work, and (3) clarity of presentation o Team composition: teams must include no more than 4 students and 2 graduate students Assignment #1 out today
