CE220 Unit 9: Tools for Promoting Healthy Habits Please have your textbook nearby. Feel free to chat with each other. We will start class at 7PM ET!

Dental Health Why do we need to place importance on dental health for children right from the start? Temporary teeth serve several purposes Establish good habits for a lifetime (Marotz, pp ) How can parents support healthy teeth for their children? Regular dental visits Teach children how to brush and be a good role model Provide them with a healthy diet

Healthy Teeth and Bones Necessary minerals: Calcium, Phosphorus, Flouride, Iron Important vitamins: A, D, C, B (essential for cell division and formation and maintenance of bones) Water: important for all body tissue How can ECPs use this information with children they care for? (Marotz, pp )

Let’s work together! Getting families educated on and involved in children’s health is a must! How would you plan in-service training for staff and family? How would you plan to get a busy parent/caregiver more involved in a child's health and safety?

HELP! From what you may glean from your readings, class materials and/or classroom experience, what health issue do you think will be/is your biggest challenge? How do you think you may (or how do you presently) handle this challenge?

FINAL PROJECT You are going to write a 2-3 page paper (in addition to a title and reference page) that explains and identifies a safe and healthy indoor and outdoor learning environment for one of the following age groups: 0-4 months 5-12 months 2-4 years 5-8 years

Final project cont….. Please make sure to include the following components: Introductory paragraph: Preview the paper, include the importance of providing a healthy indoor and outdoor learning environment, and address how health, safety, and nutrition are interrelated and dependent on one another. Paragraph 2: Identify and describe four age-appropriate learning activities and toys that reinforce the important of health, nutrition, and safety.

Final Project cont…… Paragraph 3: Discuss an ideal location, space, and security of a center, school, etc., and explain appropriate facility maintenance and upkeep. Paragraph 4: Describe at least four appropriate food safety guidelines. For example: Proper food handling procedures and precautions for breast milk, formula and solids; proper food preparation to include common food choking hazards;precautions and alternative food choices addressing common allergies including nuts, wheat, and milk. Conclusion paragraph: Summarize the main points of the paper and discuss the information mentioned in the body paragraphs.

Final Project……… As with all writing, be sure to include citations if you use information from any source to avoid plagiarism. It is always necessary to give the author credit. In addition, please make sure to include a reference page. If you need assistance, please use the APA Quick Reference Guide in the Course Home Page or visit the Kaplan University Writing Center. The viewpoint and purpose of this assignment should be clearly established and sustained throughout the paper and should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.). Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful within each section of the paper. Your paper should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics. More details can be found in the GEL-1.1 Universal Writing Rubric.

Looking Ahead…… Now that you’ve completed this course, you are ready to start thinking about the future!

Capstone Portfolio The final course in your degree program will be CE299 Capstone Course. This course will be your opportunity to reflect upon your learning and it culminates with the development of an electronic portfolio where you will showcase samples of your learning throughout this program. Therefore, you will want to carefully consider which assignments in the courses that you take may be a good example of your learning to include in your portfolio and be sure to save them in a secure place so you will be able to access them when you take the Capstone course. The Capstone portfolio you will be creating will be demonstration that you have mastered each of the program outcomes. You are permitted to select only one artifact (assignment, project, etc.) to address each program outcome. Therefore, you will want to select your artifacts carefully to make sure you have the best example of mastery for each given outcome.

Capstone portfolio cont…. You will also be creating a table of contents for your portfolio, as well providing a bit of your own background and educational goals. You’ll learn more details about the Capstone Portfolio in CE299, but for now, it’s a good idea to start gathering some potential assignments that you might want to use when you do get to the final capstone course. For example, you might want to keep a copy of your unit 6 project on a healthy meal plan or the unit 9 project on creating a safe learning environment for children. Then, when you do get to the Capstone Course, you will already have a collection of material to draw from in making your final decisions of what to include in your portfolio. Even though you have time before you will be completing the Capstone Portfolio, planning ahead may make the process easier for you down the road. It’s better to have more material than you have so that you can be selective than to have to struggle to find pieces at the end of your program. Spend just a few minutes at the end of each course reviewing the program outcomes and considering if any of the work you completed in the course might be a good example of proving mastery of one of the outcomes.

Weekly Reminders Complete Readings Read Web Resources Discussion Board: Post response to the discussion question Participate in meaningful dialogue with your classmates throughout the unit Post response to Seminar Option 2 IF you do not attend seminar Complete your final project! Project is due Tuesday June 21 st by 11:59 pm EST All outstanding work must be submitted by Thursday June 23 rd at 11:59 pm EST.
