Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) Special Challenges: Special Medicare payment structure provides funding of 1% above costs – under attack; about 60% of revenue from governmental sources Attracting physicians and other clinical staff to rural communities Fluctuating census – constant readiness, but variable patient admissions and outpatient levels Staff “wears” multiple hats In “frontier” areas, nearest hospital may be miles away Growing use of telemedicine, clinical affiliations, and system integration
