Presentation transcript:

Ted Smith

Steps to Create Application 1. Create a folder in Windows Explorer to hold the files. 2. In ArcCatalog, create a new geodatabase in WGS 1984 Web Mercator (auxiliary sphere). 3. Create a point (or line, or polygon) feature class with fields. 4. Create domains and subtypes. 5. Attach the feature class to a blank map in ArcMap, then publish the service to ArcGIS Online.

Next Steps to Create Application 1. Verify the service uploaded correctly to ArcGIS Online. 2. Add a new map, and add the service to that map. 3. If additional layers are needed, create them in ArcGIS, zip the shape files and add each one to the map. Warning: Any shape file can contain no more than 1,000 features. 4. Edit the legends to select appropriate symbols and sizes. 5. Share the map to the group.

The Resulting Map

Frustrations After editing the legend in Chrome, the changes would not save. Using Firefox solved the problem. After sharing the map to the group, the map did not display in Collector for ArcGIS (cell phone app). One can add a feature using Firefox, but no pop-ups appear. The only way to change default values is to add the feature, then edit it. Gadgets only display totals of the selected features, not the total of types of features. The data are visible in pop-up boxes when editing one feature or in the Service Details (an XML file that lacks X,Y data).

Sample XML Data for One Feature ID: 1 Name: Broken pavement Domains: Field Name: HazardSize Coded Values:[1: Less than six inches], [2: Six inches to two feet], [3: Two to six feet], More Field Name: Surface Coded Values:[1: Asphalt], [2: Concrete], [3: Packed Earth], More Templates: Name: Broken pavement Description: Drawing Tool: esriFeatureEditToolPoint Prototype: Attributes: Surface: 1 HazardType: 1 HazardSize: 4

Additional Notes Questions that need more research: Can users might select a different base map rather than the one the author selects? Can users edit the symbology? How can one export the collected data? Valuable Resource: Mann, K. (2013, Summer). Create your own collector map.
