Task 2 – Pupil Participation CPS Task 2 – Pupil Participation Comely Park Primary School – Falkirk, Scotland.

Our School Values - In keeping with the Scottish values of wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity we want our pupils to maximise achievement as they become confident individuals, successful learners, effective contributors and responsible citizens. We want them to be a part of a caring and supportive team. In all aspects of our work, we: Conduct our business with mutual respect, tolerance, fairness and equality. Embrace diversity, promote inclusion for all in a proud, safe and welcoming environment. Communicate and listen in order to involve everyone. Move forward as enthusiastic, life long learners through partnership with parents, carers and the wider community.

Pupil Voice At Comely Park School we have several different groups who listen to the pupils opinions and work together to bring about positive changes. The different groups are - Pupil Council Eco Committee Junior Road Safety Group

The Pupil Council We meet once every month for about 45 minutes. Every class has 1 representative who attends the Pupil Council Meeting. These pupils are elected in by their class. Primary 7 representatives are given the roles of chair person, secretary and treasurer. Class representatives report back decisions and ideas to their class.

The Impact of the Pupil Council Playground Markings The pupils at Comely Park School wanted to have more things to do in the playground. The Pupil Council painted games onto the playground.

Playground Wall Boards We have raised money to put games boards into the school playground. The pupil Council are responsible for ensuring the children look after the pieces every day. The Pupil Council also taught the children how to play the games. Snakes & Ladders Connect 4 Turbo Cars

Fundraising for those less fortunate that ourselves We help others by raising money. Shoe Box Appeal – We send over 30 filled shoe boxes to children in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Children In Need - We wore our onesies to school and raised over £900 Mary’s Meals -We sent 117 back packs to children in Malawi and Liberia.

The JRSO The Junior Road Safety Group is a group of primary 5 and 6 pupils who want to help make Comely Park pupils safer and healthier. Pupils meet every 6 weeks and discuss how we can make positive changes. We have 1 teacher and 2 parents on the JRSO group.

Our school is located in the centre of a busy town so road safety is very important to us. We will explain some positive changes we have made for the benefit of the pupils.

Walk to School Week and The Walking Bus We encourage pupils to walk to school. This is because walking is good for you, it is good for the planet and it means the roads will be safer as there are less cars on the road. There will also be fewer cars crowding the school gate. Pupils walking to school on a rather wet, Scottish morning.

Scoot to school We have installed 2 scooter racks in our school. All pupils can scoot to school if they would like to. This helps pupils to keep active and reduces the amount of cars on the road.

Responsible Car Users Some parents at our school park in unsafe places. The JRSO pupils use parking tickets to go out and put these tickets on the parents cars to tell them this is not a safe place to park. They also talk to the parents about safer places to park. Here are the JRSO pupils talking to some irresponsible drivers. We designed a banner to encourage parents to Park Smart

Eco Committee One member from each class is on the Eco Committee. They meet once a month to work on Eco projects around the school. This school year we won our 3rd Green Flag showing how Eco friendly we can be. The Eco committee work in our Lunch Hall every day to make sure that all our juice cartons and bottles are put into the recycling bin – soon we will be doing this with our food too!!
