OECD National Approaches to Adaptation Some Lessons learnt from Recent OECD and UNFCCC Workshops Stéphane Willems, OECD Seminar « Working Together to Respond to Climate Change », March 21, Paris

OECD Objective Stock taking of recent exchanges of national experiences on adaptation, particularly at: –The OECD Global Forum on Development and Climate (11-12 November 2004) –The UNFCCC In-Session Workshop on Adaptation (8 December 2004)

OECD National Perspectives on adaptation No comprehensive view of national approaches Large variety of actions related to adaptation –Impact and Vulnerability Assessments –Adaptation Strategies –Awareness raising, stakeholder involvement and capacity building

OECD Key insights on national approaches Adaptation is a multi-faceted process Stakeholder involvement and co- operation are key elements of adaptation strategies The right types –and combination- of assessments are needed to move into actions

OECD Key Insights on national approaches (II) Adapting to current impacts is an important need, but not the only one Mainstreaming involves more than integration of adaptation in sectoral planning Countries are different, but can share knowledge, technologies and tools

OECD Conclusion Exchanges of information are helpful! Other possible topics: –Monitoring and Review –National Adaptation Research –Closer look at sectoral policies in practices (see Wellington Workshop) –National frameworks for adaptation –Adaptation in a broader economic framework
