Marvelous Metric MEASUREMENT! centimeter milligram liter kilogram Marvelous Metric MEASUREMENT! kilometer decimeter milliliter seconds gram

Measurement Quantitative or Qualitative? ..think what it means when you say “quality over quantity” Measurement is QUANTITATIVE information Quantitative=numerical Qualitative=descriptive

Measurement “The book is 65…” “It is kilometers until we get there…” Each measurement represents a quantity -quantity: something that has size/magnitude/amount **5 grams (a measurement) represents: -mass (a quantity) Every measurement has a number & a unit of measurement. -unit of measurement: compares what is being measured to a previously defined size -liter, kilometer, gram etc. “The book is 65…” NEEDS A UNIT OF MEASUREMENT! Unit of measurement depends on the quantity being measured.. If mass: the book is 65 milligrams -If length: the book is 65 centimeters “It is kilometers until we get there…” NEEDS A NUMBER! Down the street: 1 kilometer --To Pittsburgh: 90 kilometers

It is so American to try & be different… The units of measurement we typically use-inches, miles, feet, pounds…are NOT STANDARD Meaning what….? Ever traveled to another country?

SI units  aka the International System of Measurement SI units ARE international and are used universally. Plus…they are in lovely powers of 10 which make it nice & easy to convert between quantities English System (ew) is only simple to convert with previous knowledge… What about “foot” tells you how many “inches” are within it? What about “kilometer” tells you how many “meters” are within it?

Which quantities can we measure? Length unit of measurement: meter (m) mass unit of measurement: gram (g) volume unit of measurement: liter (L) passage of time unit of measurement: second (s) temperature unit of measurement: Kelvin (K) amount of substance unit of measurement: mole (mol)

Some SI base units are…. write this table into notes meter Mass kg QUANTITY BASE UNIT SYMBOL meter Mass kg kelvin K Time s Amount of substance mol write this table into notes

Prefixes remember powers of 10.. Mega---------1,000,000 times larger than the base unit (1,000,000x the size) Kilo------------1000 times larger than the base unit (1000x the size) BASE UNIT  Deci-----------10 times smaller than the base unit (1/10 the size) Centi----------100 times smaller than the base unit (1/100 the size) Milli-----------1000 times smaller than the base unit (1/1000 the size) Micro-----1,00,000 times smaller than the base unit (1/1,000,000 the size) Nano---1,000,000,000 times smaller than the base unit (1/1,000,000,000 the size)

the distance between two points LENGTH (l) the distance between two points Base Unit: m

LENGTH Instead of inches, foot, yard, mile (ew, gross) We use nanometer, micrometer, millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, meter, kilometer which is easy. because the word __________ is in each!

Millimeter(mm)-thickness of a dime There are _________ millimeters (mm) in a centimeter (cm). There are _________millimeters (mm) in a meter (m). There are _________millimeters (mm) in a kilometer (km).

centimeter (cm)-about the diameter of a school blouse button There are __________centimeters (cm) in a meter (m). There are __________centimeters (cm) in a kilometer (km).

meter (m)-about the height of a doorknob one meter

kilometer(km)-about the length of 5 city blocks 1 kilometer (km) is equal to __________ meters (m). 1 kilometer (km) is equal to __________centimeters (cm).

What makes the most sense… What would you measure your driveway in? What would you measure the width of your computer screen in? What would you measure the distance between you and your best friend’s house in? What would you measure the length of you fingernail in?

Micrometer (μm) 1000000μm=1m 1000mm=1m Millimeter (mm) 100 cm = 1m Centimeter (cm) Meter (m) 1m 1/1000 km=1m Kilometer (km)

conversions cheat sheet KILOMETER 1km=1000m 1 m=1/1000km CENTIMETER 1 cm=1/100m 1m=100cm MILLIMETER 1mm=1/1000m 1 m=1000mm “meter” “meter” “meter”

Measure of the quantity of matter MASS (m) Measure of the quantity of matter Base Unit: kg

MASS Instead of ounce, pound (ew, gross) We use milligram, gram, kilogram which is easy. because the word __________ is in each!

milligram (mg) -mass of a very small snowflake There are _________ milligrams (mg) in a gram (g). There are _________milligrams (mg) in a kilogram (kg).

gram(g)-about the mass of a dime

kilogram(kg)-the mass of a typical text book 1 kilogram (kg) is equal to __________ grams (g). 1 kilogram (kg) is equal to __________milligrams (mg).

What makes the most sense… What would you measure your mass in? What would you measure the mass of your backpack in? What would you measure 20 grains of salt in? What would you measure a beaker in?

The amount of space occupied by an object VOLUME(V) The amount of space occupied by an object Base Unit: m3

Volume Instead of teaspoon, tablespoon, ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon We use milliliter, liter which is easy. because the word __________ is in each!

Volume 1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3 1 L = 1000 cm3 large amount! thus 1mL =1cm3

Volume 1 milliliter (mL) is equal to __________ liters (L).

Length Measurement

What If What You are Measuring isn’t an exact amount of centimeters? Report in decimals: 2.6 centimeters

just a little length lab.. 1.Measure your foot size (shoes stay on!!) ________cm 2. Measure the thickness (cover to cover) of your Chemistry book 3. Measure the length of floor to doorknob 4. Measure the length of one floor tile 5. Measure the length of the room (both dimensions) ________cm (front to back) ____________cm (side to side)

the EVIL inches..do NOT mistake them for our super centimeters! BEWARE! the EVIL inches..do NOT mistake them for our super centimeters!

just a little length lab.. 1.Measure your foot size (shoes stay on!!) ________cm 2. Measure the thickness (cover to cover) of your Chemistry book ________cm 3. Measure the length of floor to doorknob ________cm 4. Measure the area of one floor tile (cm x cm =cm2) ________cm2 5. Measure the length of the room (both dimensions) ________cm (front to back) ____________cm (side to side) 5. Measure your height ____________cm
