Course Outline Course Description: This introductory course is about one of the fastest growing industries in North America and the world. In this course, you will learn about the abundance of jobs available in this industry and how you may choose to pursue a career. Choices could include chef, bartender, pilot, flight attendant, ski instructor, hotel manager, party planner, etc. Here, you will discover Hospitality and Tourism as well as the many possibilities that come with it. The door is open for you to experience this industry.

Course Outline Units of Study: 1. Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism 2. Identify Tourism as it relates to the Atlantic region 3. Marketing strategies, trends and technologies that relate to the industry 4. The Five Sectors of Hospitality and Tourism 5. Career opportunities within Hospitality and Tourism

In Class Assignments and Notebook 20% You will usually be marked on keeping a notebook of work done in class. I will not always be collecting worksheets but I will come to see that you have done the work. I will give a checklist in advance of the work and will check of work as it is completed. Easy marks

Tests You will have to understand the basics of writing a basic argument with supporting paragraphs. All unit tests will have an essay question. 30%

Yes, you will have to write in this class but I will give you the tools you need in order to be successful with this. There is one essay project which will take us the better part of a week on the computers to work on it.

Projects You will have to create and present work on a regular basis. Tourism is a social industry and you will have to get comfortable with your peers. 40%

Projects Group Work – Many of the assignments done in the class are designed for group work but it is not required. You can and will receive a different mark from your partner if I see one person doing all the work. 40%

Projects Group Work – You do not have to work in a group but you will be required to complete the same amount of work. Those that do work in a group will be paired up by me randomly. 40%
