TCDI operation until LS2 LIU-SPS-to-LHC Transfer Line Protection Devices (TCDI) Review 1 Oliver Aberle 26/03/2014 O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)
Outline Actual Design Flexibility / Sacrificial? From a single unit towards couples? Modifications / Options Conclusion O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)2
Actual Design O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)3 Flange to flange length 1.34 m Graphite blocks R4550, 1.2 m long, 37 mm thick, clamped 2 independent motors per jaw Flatness over 1.2 m: 0.1 mm Parallelism over 1.2 m: 0.1 mm Alignement by survey: 0.1 mm
Actual Design O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)4 Phase one table Flange DN 60! No RF fingers/ferrites No water cooling No quick connection (electrical or for vacuum) No plug-in for positioning
Flexibility / Sacrificial? O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)5 Keep design features o from TCDI/ring collimators (e.g. quick plugin, integrated BPM) and profit from o collimator development (e.g. new materials, manufacturing technologies ) Stay within the actual length for a mono-block jaw o Two TCDIs with the existing design (1.2 m), maybe different jaw material? o Jaw clamping system allows assembly of different materials on the same beam o Overall positioning precision TCDIs ~250 µm. o Relative positioning between the two neighboring TCDIs ~50 µm. o Would have 4 motors per TCDI “jaw” o Very important: Best knowledge of beam position With bellows etc.: 3.5 m for full flexibility o Flexibility = exchange only first one in case of beam impact
O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)6
From single unit towards couples? LIU TCDIs = long TCDIs 1.9 m long TCDIs (for densities of graphite, BN) Longer/low density – preferable for thermo-mechanics (adding a second TCDI -> 2.4 m length) Higher density for better efficiency (start with Graphite, go to higher density downstream) 2 main options: o Stand alone units o coupled units O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)7
From single unit towards couples? 2 main options: o Stand alone units o coupled units Pumping module allows for fast separation, remote handling and to use spare surface O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD) mm
O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)9 MKT vacuum connection Modifications / Options
O. Aberle (EN-STI-TCD)10 Integrated BPM o Significant higher complexity of design Water cooling / RF issues Remote handling to be studied o Several features available o Reduced tunnel space and different slope! Normal operation – low dose Accident case – high dose, but fast cool down (see Helmut’s talk)
Conclusion Stay close to dimensions of proven design o TCDI design for simpler, cheaper manufacturing, more material flexibility o TCTP design has more options o Pick form both options – other input (e.g. TDI?) Two units can do the job More studies needed (see previous talks) Feasibility to have new system ready for LS2 Rough number for the budget: 500 kCHF / unit o Options have a cost (cable length!, remote handling) O.
