The True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle By: Avi
Part 1: Chapter 1 and 2 Charlotte Doyle is about to get on The Seahawk. The ship’s captain is Captain Jaggery. She is surprised to hear how much many people loathe him. She must be put on this boat with 2 other families. When she hears that she will be the only passenger that is not part of the crew, she is very lonely. She has met only one person of the crew that she believes she can befriend.
Chapter 3 and 4 Once Charlotte has awoken upon the ship, she decides that she will get off the ship and make it back to her school where her teacher will make the necessary decisions on what to do next. When she is shaken and nauseated, she realizes that if she were to get off the boat, she would be flung into the sea. She is given a dirk from Zachariah. After throwing the dirk, she realizes that she must return it to Zachariah. After walking outside, she feels the rain. The sea is like the sky, dark and gray
Chapter 5 and 6 Charlotte is furious after Zachariah has told her that Captain Jaggery has taken a man’s arm right off of his body. After that matter, she has been invited to have tea with the captain. After talking for a while, he has told her of his secret place where he keeps his muskets and that they are all loaded but locked and that there are no other guns aboard the ship. After the captain has given orders out to the crew, Mr. Hollybrass is asked to have Mr. Barlow show Charlotte where her trunk is stored. Barlow is telling the same story that Zachariah did, but Charlotte still doesn’t believe either of them. She goes to get her trunk but is scared and even more when the candle goes out and everything goes black.
Chapter 7 and 8 Charlotte is still stuck in pitch black. She believes that she sees a head. She pulls out the dirk and grabs for it. She is irritated that she was scared of a carving in a brown nut. Charlotte is going out of her mind trying to figure out if she had seen 2 heads instead of just 1, and if it was someone she didn’t recognize or someone new. She is now going through her life on board the Seahawk. Meals were not as good because things tend to go bad. Getting ready was not as easy because she had to go over ever aspect to get as clean as she could. She is told of the storm from Captain Jaggery.
Chapter 9 Charlotte is talking to Ewing, another crew member, when a needle breaks and Ewing needs to get a new one. Charlotte is kind enough to offer her help and she must fetch the needle from the forecastle. As she reaches the door, she hears muted voices. She now knows that the crew kept the other families off and that they do not want Charlotte on the boat spying on them. She finds out she has not recognized the other face before because he was the stowaway. She feels she must go to Captain Jaggery with this new information.
Chapter 10 and 11 Captain Jaggery is not amused be the Red Robin that Charlotte has found in the forecastle. After telling him of such a thing, he gets his muskets and a whip and is now going to try and punish one of the crew members for trying to get the rest of the crew against him. He learns of Cranick, the stowaway and feels he must get rid of him once and for all. After killing him, He attempts to murder Zachariah. Charlotte does not like this outcome and grabs the whip and slashes Jaggery’s face. He is mad and walks away. He believes he has killed Zachariah, but only the crew know that Zachariah is not dead, only cut up but the whip.
Chapter 12 Charlotte knows what she did wrong and she tries to made amends with the captain. She feels the sooner the better. She goes to his cabin and asks for forgiveness but Captain Jaggery is not forgiving her for the mark she left on his face. She feels even lonelier than she did when she first got on the ship. She tries to help the crew out but no one is letting her. They are all using the excuse that she is the lady passenger but she believes differently. She manages to say one thing to the crew she never thought she would. “I’ve come to be one of the crew.”
Part 2: Chapter 13 The crew is not completely sure that she is trust worthy or is even telling the truth, but she keeps trying until they say yes. All men agree that if she can climb the royal yard, the biggest mast, and come back down whole and is still willing to serve as one of the crew then they will let her be one. She has fulfilled her task and is now part of the crew. Captain Jaggery has watched all of this and is now walking towards her.
Chapter 14 and 15 Captain Jaggery is not happy and now that she is part of the crew she must sleep in the forecastle instead of her old cabin. The captain gives Mr. Hollybrass orders to put Charlotte’s stuff in the forecastle and put her down as Mister Doyle and log that Miss Doyle was lost. After days and days of working, Charlotte learns of a hurricane coming. They go through the hurricane and disaster strikes as Mr. Hollybrass was stabbed in the back and murdered. Captain Jaggery blames Charlotte.
Chapter 16 and 17 Charlotte must now have a trial to try and prove she is not guilty. She is put down in the brig and must now wait until it is time for the trial to start. She has been waiting for only a couple of minutes and she has already found out that Zachariah is not dead. They try and figure out who really murdered Hollybrass but they are cut short when Captain Jaggery comes down to tell Charlotte that she will have a trial. hiding
Chapter 18 and 19 Her trial is beginning and she is not happy when the captain accuses her of being guilty of murder. He has given her the penalty of being hanged in the next 24 hours. Charlotte is led back to the holding brig. Charlotte has told Zachariah of her punishment for something she did not do. Zachariah and Charlotte come up with the conclusion that the captain does know that Zachariah is alive and that he accused Charlotte for murdering Hollybrass so that she can admit that Zachariah is alive and he wants prove so that he can kill him for sure this time.
Chapter 20 and 21 Charlotte and Zachariah come up with a plan to get rid of all of Captain Jaggery’s muskets and rally up the crew again to fight against him. They have gotten Keetch to agree to the plan and he is going to tell the rest of the crew about it. Charlotte goes to the captain’s cabin and she is caught getting in to the cabin. Captain Jaggery is there waiting for her. He is telling her about Keetch and how he was the one who has told the captain about everything the crew is doing. He has admitted to killing Hollybrass and blaming it on her. He gets one of his pistols and fires it. He plunges at her as the crew watches. He is flung into the sea, never to be seen again
Chapter 22 and 23 Zachariah is now the captain and they have reached providence. Charlotte is home with her family and they only treat her with disrespect. They burn all of her things that she had on the ship. She is disappointed by everything that is going on and she looks in the newspaper for when the Seahawk is sailing again. She packs her things and goes to the dock. The ship is getting ready to sail just as she boards the ship. She is now living on the boat.
