Discussion topics for PSRA-TF meeting on energy and utility applications September 24, DRAFT

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 1: Scope of Applications PSRA-TF has identified the following set of energy and utility related applications. This public safety sector includes the Gas, Power, Energy, Water, Waste and Oil Refining industries. Are there additions to this list and which applications should be prioritized? – Support control signals for high voltage power line circuit breakers – Used to shut down power grid facilities during an event – Relay operation commonly used to isolate equipment – Frequently rely on SCADA systems for centralized supervisory control – Fixed point sensors in remote/isolated locations – Sensor circuits for gas, power, water, waste and energy companies 2

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 2: Current Provisioning methods What type of facilities and circuit provisioning currently supports this application? – Low speed data over Digital Data Services – Devices that transmit tones over DS0 Voice Grade – Contact closure alarms over Metallic circuits 3

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 3: Requirements What are the unique requirements supporting this class of applications? – Reliability – Security – Latency – Electrical isolation requirements – Dependencies on copper facilities – Ruggedized equipment needs 4

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 4: Relationship to Safety/Environmental Codes What national, state and local safety and environmental codes are key to this discussion and would impact (or be impacted by) the transition to new media and IP solutions? 5

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 5: Stakeholder organizations Who are the major stakeholder organizations and industry groups that represent this public safety sector? 6

ATIS Board of Directors’ Meeting October 20, 2011 PSRA Alarm Applications Discussion September, 2014 Question 6: Future solution roadmap Are there specific best-in-class solutions or examples of Smart City implementations that could represent a future pathway? 7
