PSYCHOLOGY THE BEGINNING

ROOTS OF PYSCHOLOGY IT BEGAN WITH THE ANCIENT GREEKS: HIPPOCRATES THEORIZED THAT OUR MIND & SOUL RESTED IN THE BRAIN BUT WAS NOT COMPOSED OF PHYSICAL SUBSTANCE.. WHAT THE HECK DOES THIS MEAN? DUALISM IS WHAT THIS CAME TO BE KNOWN AS…..

PLATO PLATO ALSO BELIEVED IN DUALISM, BUT HIS BELIEF WAS THAT WE ARE BORN WITH OUR TRAITS…..i.e. INNATE

ARISTOTLE PLATO’S STUDENT, ARISTOTLE BELIEVED THAT THE MIND/SOUL RESULTS FROM OUR ANATOMICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL EXPERIENCES….i.e. MONISM IN OTHER WORDS, WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE KNOW ARE AS A RESULT OF OUR EXPERIENCES ALONG LIFE. PHILOSOPHER JOHN LOCKE BELIEVED IN MONISM ALSO BUT THEORIZED THAT WE ALL START WITH A BLANK SLATE AND IT BECOMES “WRITTEN” ON AS WE GO.

SCHOOLS OF PSYCHOLOGY IT WASN’T UNTIL LATE 1800’S THAT PSYCHOLOGY CAME INTO ITSELF AS A SEPARATE DISCIPLINE IN THE FIELD OF SCIENCE. DARWIN’S THEORY OF EVOLUTION HELPED FACILITATE THIS. NATURAL SELECTION

SCHOOL OF STRUCTURALISM WILHELM WUNDT’S PERSPECTIVE CENTERED AROUND THE FACT/THEORY THAT HOW WE REACT TO SENSATIONS SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHO WE ARE. BY TRAINING TO BE INTROSPECTIVE, WE CAN DEFINE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF HUMAN MINDS BY TESTING, IDENTIFYING, AND DOCUMENTING HOW WE REACT TO SENSATIONS, FEELINGS, & IMAGES.

SCHOOL OF FUNCTIONALISM AMERICAN WILLIAM JAMES’ PERSPECTIVE WAS INTERESTED IN THE FUNCTION OR PURPOSE OF BEHAVIORAL ACTS. HE MORE BELIEVED THAT WE CONTROL (TO A CERTAIN EXTENT) HOW WE PROCESS SENSATIONS AND ACTIONS. FUNCTIONALISTS SOUGHT TO EXAMINE HOW WE RESPOND PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND MENTALLY TO SITUATIONS AND OUR ENVIRONMENT. THIS WAS AN ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN BEHAVIOR…

HOW WE PERCEIVE

THE SECRET JUDGEMENT LOOK AROUND THE ROOM IDENTIFY ANOTHER PERSON USING A LIST OF ONE WORD DESCRIPTORS CALL OUT THE DESCRIPTORS, (AS MANY AS YOU CAN WRITE) WE WILL SEE AFTERWARDS IF YOUR CLASSMATES USED THE SAME SENSORY PERCEPTIONS TO DESCRIBE SIMILAR INDIVIDUALS.

TEST YOUR INTUTIONS!!! Test your intuitions worksheet - Ch. 1 Psych.docx hierarchy of needs.doc

FUNCTIONALISM’S INFLUENCE DUE TO FUNCIONALISM, WE NOW HAVE SUBFIELDS OF PSYCHOLOGY: BEHAVIORISMPSYCHOANALYTIC/PSYCHODYNAMIC HUMANISTICBIOLOGICAL EVOLUTIONARYCOGNITIVE SOCIOCULTURAL (NEW)
