Lesson 2-7 Problem Solving: Draw A Picture and Write a Number Sentence Mr. Baker 2nd Grade

Today We Will Learn! Information in a problem can be shown using a picture or diagram and used to understand and solve the problem. Some problems can be solved by writing and completing a number sentence or equation.

Vocabulary

You have learned that using objects can help you solve math story problems. Today, you will learn a new problem solving strategy.

STRATEGIES: doubles doubles plus one making 10 Which strategy can you use to solve these problems? 4 + 4 = 8 + 7 = 4 + 6 = 9 + 9 =

The Problem!! Suppose Jill dropped 10 counters on the workmat and 2 landed in the first box, 1 landed in the second box, and 3 landed in the third box. The others landed off the mat. How could you use counters and a number sentence to find how many landed on the mat?

What number sentence can we write to show this problem? LET’S SEE! 2 landed in the first box. So let’s put 2 counters in the first box. 1 landed in the second box so let’s put 1 counter in the second box. 3 landed in the third box, so put 3 counters in the third box. What number sentence can we write to show this problem?

Let’s Explore!! Use your workmat. Drop your counters on the mat. Try to get as many in the boxes as you can. Record your results on your workmat for numbers 2 and 3.

Learning Bridge! In this lesson, you will learn how to solve addition story problems by both drawing pictures and writing number sentences. Let’s watch and learn! CLICK HERE (After learning bridge use guided practice page to continue lesson then return here for quickcheck and close.)

CLOSE! In this lesson, you learned that you can solve addition story problems by drawing a picture and writing a number sentence.
