DO NOW 1) Take out your Chapter 1 packet 2) Complete Do Now questions on p. 3) Wait quietly to begin

Today’s Learning Target I can – list and describe the 7 characteristics of life

Chapter 1: Biology & You Section 1

Think – Pair - Share Part 1: Think of all the characteristics you have in common with a bird (ex: robin) Turn to your shoulder partner and share your ideas..

The Characteristics of Life Every “living” thing is called an organism Life is characterized by 7 main properties Mini – Group Activity ◦ Discuss and list on an index card as many characteristics of life as you can think of using the picture How many non living things share these characteristics?

1. Cell Structure & Function Cells are highly organized Cells have thin coverings called membranes Cell Theory ◦ All living things are made of cells ◦ Cells are the smallest unit capable of life functions ◦ Cell come only from other cells Complete the question in your notes on the organization of living things, once your done compare with your group! Did you know? -Your body contains more than 100 trillion cells?!

Give a fact, Give a name! If you can name this organism raise your hand If you can name this organism AND give one fact about it, raise your hand and hold up only your pointer finger

2.Reproduction Reproduction- the process by which living organisms make more of their own kind All living things can reproduce Reproduction is not needed for the survival of an individual, but necessary for the survival of a species

Can you name this? 1) If you can name this organism raise your hand 2) Pair up with someone that does not have their hand raised 3) With your partner, decide which type of reproduction this organism will go through

3. Metabolism Metabolism- the sum of all chemical reactions carried out in an organism All living things carry out many chemical reactions in order to obtain and use energy to grow, move, and process information  obtained from chemical reactions Did you know? A hummingbirds metabolism is 1,400 calories/kilogram compared to a dove that’s 127 calories/kilogram!

4. Homeostasis Homeostasis: ability to maintain a stable internal environment even if the external environment changes Did you know? Many arctic animals can maintain a constant body temp. because of their thick layer of fat? How do we maintain a constant body temp?

5. Heredity Heredity- the passing of traits from parent to offspring A gene is the basic unit of heredity DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) – molecule that carries directions for inheritance, for every organism on Earth This is why children tend to look like their parents!

6. Evolution Evolution- change in the inherited traits of species over generations All living things must be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions

7. Interdependence (LAST ONE!) Interdependent- organisms are dependent on one another and their environment for survival Organisms in a biological community must live and interact with other organisms

7. Interdependence Example Jot – Pair – Share Describe interdependence in terms of this picture of an owl and a mouse Think about the food chain to help you describe this characteristic of life Share with two other students

Clean up – Close up Today’s Learning Target: I can – list and describe the 7 characteristics of life 1) Grab an index card and put your name on it 2) Without your notes, list 4 characteristics of life and turn it in up front 3) Chapter 1 Quiz tomorrow!

DO NOW 1) Grab your textbooks for today 2) Review your notes from Chapter 1 3) Think of questions on material you are confused on 4) Quiz soon!

Today’s Learning Target I can – describe and evaluate three real world problems in the area of biology

Solving Real-World Problems – Section 2 1) In your group, have one person take out their whiteboard, marker, and eraser 2) As a group, list 5 real-world issues in the area of biology 3) Think about how scientists are working to solve these problems

Solving Real-World Problems – Section 2 1) Turn to p. 10 in your textbooks 2) Each group will be assigned one issues associated with biology 3) Read your section carefully, take thorough notes in bullet point fashion

Solving Real-World Problems – Section 2 4) Create a small poster that includes the following: ◦ Name of your problem ◦ Describe why this is a problem ◦ Describe how scientists are trying to solve this problem and the benefits ◦ Give definitions of any “bold” words that the class should know 5) You will present this poster to the class

DO NOW 1) Take out your Chapter 1 packet 2) Complete p. Do Now #3 Questions 3) Get your poster ready to present 4) Chapter 1 Test tomorrow!

Today’s Learning Target I can – describe and evaluate three real world problems in the area of biology

DO NOW 1) Review your Chapter 1 notes 2) Think of questions on material you are still confused on 3) Chapter 1 Test soon!
