Plan A Community Playground

Wilkes-Barre and local community members are looking to 3rd grade students at Wilkes Elementary to help plan, design, and build a new and improved playground at University Park! The town is allowing each group to use one acre of land to plan their playground. In addition, they are providing you with a budget of $15,000 to purchase materials to build your model! Kids know playgrounds best! Decide what is most exciting, creative, safe, and within your budget! Have fun planning, designing, problem-solving, and discovering new ideas along the way! Accountants - Get ready to watch that budget! Engineers - Put on your “design hat” and get ready to build those models! Project Managers - Be prepared to keep everyone on task, make decisions, and problem-solve The Challenge:

MATERIALS Pizza boxes Cups Turf – green felt Tape Measures Tape Mulch Sand Straws Pom-poms Glue Scissors Craft sticks Toothpicks String Construction paper Play dough Pipe cleaners Cardboard tubes

JOBS Accountant **Responsible for budget **Make sure you do not overspend! **Handle money **Complete budget plan Project Manager **Oversees project **Keep everyone on task **Delegate tasks and work cooperatively **Make decisions and choices if problems or concerns arise Engineer **oversees the design elements of playground model

BUDGET Each Team Receives $15,000 4 swing set……………….……..$2,000 2 swing set……………….……..$4,000 Straight Slide……………………$1,000 Tube Slide……………………….$2,000 Sandbox……………………....….$1,500 Mulch……………………….….....$2,000 Sand………………………….....…$500 Merry-Go-Round……………...…$3,500 Sports Field………………….…...$2,500 Basketball Court/Macadam…..…$2,500 Jungle Gym………………….……$5,000

CATEGORY Plan Plan is neat with clear measurements and labeling for all components. Plan is neat with clear measurements and labeling for most components. Plan provides clear measurements and labeling for most components. Plan does not show measurements clearly or is not inadequately labeled. Budget Budget is clear and accurate. All budget requirements were met. Budget is clear and accurate. Most budget requirements were met. Budget is somewhat clear and accurate. Some budget requirements were met. Budget is not clear or accurate. Budget requirements were not met. Construction -Design and Engineering Appropriate materials were selected and creatively modified in ways that made them even better. Appropriate materials were selected and there was an attempt at creative modification to make them even better. Appropriate materials were selected. Inappropriate materials were selected and contributed to a product that performed poorly. Construction - Final Product Great care taken in construction process so that the structure is neat, attractive and follows plans accurately. Constuction was careful and accurate for the most part, but 1-2 details could have been refined for a more attractive product. Construction accurately followed the plans, but 3-4 details could have been refined for a more attractive product. Construction appears careless or haphazard. Many details need refinement for a strong or attractive product. Powerpoint Powerpoint provides a complete record of planning, construction, modifications, and some reflection about the strategies used. Powerpoint provides a complete record of planning, construction, testing, modifications, and reasons for modifications. Powerpoint provides some detail about planning, construction, and modifications. Powerpoint provides very little detail about several aspects of the planning, construction, and modification process. Cooperative Group All team members worked cooperatively to complete the task in an organized way. Each member contributed equally to completing their task. All team members worked cooperatively to complete the task in an organized way. Most members contibuted equally to completing their task. Some team members worked cooperatively to complete the task in an organized way. Some team members did more work than others. Team did not work cooperatively to complete the task. The work was not shared by each team member. Total / 20

Step 1 - Plan Identify what you already know about perimeter and area. Measure the perimeter of your playground (pizza box) to the nearest inch. Using your measurements, draw the geometric shape of the playground (pizza box) on graph paper, and clearly label the perimeter and area. Ask an adult to check you work before moving on to Step 2!

Step 2 - Plan/Budget/Sketch As a group, look at the options available for your playground. Decide which items are most important for your team to have in your new playground, and what meets your budget! Engineers/Project Managers - determine what things may or may not “fit” in your design, and start sketching them onto your graph paper within your area. Accountants - start working the $ - on the budget sheet…can you afford everything? Discuss/Problem-Solve your sketches and budget problems that may arise! Show an adult your budget before moving on to Step 3!

Step 3 - Home Depot! Bring your budget and design to the Home Depot to purchase your materials. Make sure you know your final total, and have your money ready for the cashier. Do you know how much change you should get back? Load your vehicle with your materials, and get ready to build! Home Depot - You Can Do It…We Can Help! Have fun Remember…Good TEAM Work

STEP 4 - PowerPoint Presentation

Name Your Playground List the members of your team

Using the drawing tools, draw the shapes and label the parts of your playground! Merry-G0-Round Basketball Court

Budget List every item your group purchased for your playground. List the price next to each item. Find the final total for your playground! Example: 2-Swing Set - $1,000 Tube Slide - $2,000 Total $

Be Ready To Share… Have a short presentation ready: “Why our playground should be chosen for the University Park!”

Go back and add pictures, colors, transitions, and sound to your presentation if you have time!
