Who they are: Their mission-To protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. Since 1935 they have helped protect more than 109 million acres of America’s wildest places. Their goal is to ensure that future generations will enjoy the clean air and water, wildlife, beauty and opportunities for recreation and renewal that forests, rivers, deserts and mountain provide.

Some Highlights: The 1964 Wilderness act The Alaska National Interest Lands and Conservation Act of 1980 The California Desert Protection Act of 1994 They have also established the National Forest Management Act, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the National Trails Act, and the National Wildlife Refuge Improvement Act.

They Protect wild places by: Crafting and winning passage of legislation protecting wilderness and wild lands. Gaining adequate federal funding to ensure good management of the lands. Defending places like the America’s Arctic from oil drilling.

They improve the way lands and resources are managed by: Leading new research and making sure that the latest science guides decisions abut their public lands. Working with decision makers to ensure that wild places stay that way while awaiting wilderness protection. Pressing for sensible management decisions about things like oil and gas development, off road vehicle use and logging.
