Standards Status Report – Summer Meeting, 2008 S2ESC Management Board July 30, 2008 Updated July 29, 2008 Dave Schultz Jim Moore Malia Zaman

Std for Software Quality Assurance Plans Last revised in Sept Ron Dean has had to resign as WG Chair; Keith Middleton is replacing him The next version will be a process standard PAR was approved on June 7, 2007 F2F meeting was held Feb

Std for Software Configuration Management Plans Last reaffirmed in February 2005 Chuck Walrad will be WG Chair The next version will be a process standard, and will incorporate the material from the compliance matrix into the text Modified PAR submitted, will be reviewed by NESCOM in September

Std for Software and System Test Documentation The Standards Board approved the revision in March, 2008 Claire Lohr was WG chair This standard is input to the Software Testing standard that is being jointly developed with SC7

Std for Software Unit Testing (last reaffirmed Dec. 2002) MZ: As of Dec IEEE Standards Board meeting, 1008 has been extended to 2009 JWM: SC 7 has approved a joint project on software and system testing and formed a working group to execute the project. IEEE has contributed 829 (and the draft revision of 829) and 1008 to serve as “base documents” BSI has contributed their two standards to serve as base documents A multi-part ISO/IEC standard is expected Ursula Parker currently represents IEEE as the project editor IEEE PARs are needed – Best to wait for completion of the new IEEE/ISO agreement before doing this.

(1 of 2) [I’ve asked Roger for a status update] Std for Verification and Validation Roger has an active WG, with members The next version will include systems and hardware V&V; proposed title is “Standard for Systems and Software Verification and Validation” MZ: The PAR for the next revision was approved in 2006 and expires in 2010

(2 of 2) There are some concerns: They’re trying to address H/W V&V issues explicitly, but Jim’s not sure they have credibility in the Hardware arena Scott expressed some concern with how 1012 addresses testing They’re not in sync with the direction SC7 is going Will 1012 be consistent with ISO, 1008, and other standards efforts? JWM: The new SC7 project on testing wants to include “static techniques” within their scope. The working group chair is an admirer of 1012.

Recommended Practice for Software Design Descriptions First published in Sept. 1998; never revised Keith Middleton has replaced Vladan Jovanovic as WG chair; Rich Hilliard will continue as project editor Rich has requested formation of the balloting group, and initiated the Mandatory Editorial Coordination (MEC) The current PAR has been extended to Dec MZ: The invitation has closed and MEC has been returned to Keith/Rich to review. MZ:Next step to start ballot. Note: Standard needs maintenance by year end, and PAR expires as well. DL for Dec. Stds Board is Oct 20, 08

Std for Software Reviews Dennis Lawrence was WG Chair RevCom approved the revision of IEEE 1028 on June 11, 2008

Std Classification for Software Anomalies Last reaffirmed in Sept MZ: Revision PAR was submitted in 2005 and PAR expires in 2009 Dave Zubrow has replaced Dave Card as WG chair He plans to convert this to a process standard; the title may need to be changed The WG is almost done with the revision. As of March 2008, their intention was to provide a copy to the Management Board for a Readiness Review by July 21, We haven’t seen a WG roster since September 2005

(slide #1 of 2) Rec. Practice for Software Acquisition Last reaffirmed in Sept MZ: PAR for revision was approved at May 2008 Stds. Board meeting We intend to revise 1062 for consistency with ISO/IEC 15288, which IEEE has now adopted

(slide #2 of 2) Joe Jarzombek has assigned Stan Wisseman, one of his contractors, to chair the P1062 WG. Joe and Stan are developing a direction for the project Joe reports that Stan Wisseman has joined IEEE and IEEE-SA in order to function as a WG Chair The ExCom has suggested that Stan Wisseman look at the S/W Acquisition CMMI for ideas NesCom approved the P1062 PAR on May 19, 2008; the PAR expires on December 31, 2012 Now that the P1062 PAR has been approved, we’re looking for a membership roster

Std. for Software User Documentation Last revised in Dec SC7 WG2 intends to incorporate 1063 into a new ISO/IEC Process and Product standard, ISO/IEC IEEE 1063 has been reaffirmed to keep it alive until SC7 completes their revision MZ: Std has been reaffirmed as of July 2007 JWM: The new ISO/IEC has been published Need new PAR for 26514, indicating that it will replace (A. Reilly)

(1 of 2) Guide for CASE Tool Interconnections – (various subtitles) Carl Singer is chair of all five WGs was reaffirmed in Sept was approved in Sept will be reaffirmed next year

(2 of 2) The WG has completed its revision of The PAR has been extended to December 2008 MZ: Please note that PAR expires Dec., 08. DL for Dec. Stds. Board Meeting is Oct 20, 08 MZ: The IEEE mandatory editorial review is complete and is now in the hands of the chair to revise and start ballot. The balloting group for is ready and waiting is presently on hold; the PAR was withdrawn on September 26, 2007 Once has been completed, the WG will resubmit the PAR for , together with the PAR for a new standard,

Standard for Software Safety Plans Last reaffirmed in Dec MZ: At the Dec Stds. Board meeting, 1228 was extended till Dec There is no current activity on this standard JWM: Some material from 1228 has been adapted for the CD draft of ISO/IEC However, generalization from “safety” to “assurance” is necessary; the current draft of the generalized text is naive. In any case, there is probably a need for continued existence of However, revision would be appropriate to clarify its relationship to ISO/IEC

(also 1362a-1998) Guide for Information Technology – Concept of Operations Document MZ: Reaffirmation of 1362 and 1362a was approved at the Dec Stds. Board meeting We should revise this for consistency with ISO/IEC 15288; we’ll need a WG chair We’ve sent IEEE 1362 to SC7 JWM: ITSM study didn’t make use of it JWM: Requirements Engineering project may make use of it Jim reports that, although the ISTM study decided not to use 1362, the Requirements Engineering project may decide to use it

Adoption of ISO/IEC International Standard 14102: Information Technology – Guideline for the Evaluation and Selection of CASE Tools Last reaffirmed in December 2004 JWM: The revision of ISO/IEC has been submitted for FDIS ballot – the final administrative ballot Once the revised ISO/IEC is published, S2ESC will probably initiate a project to adopt it as a replacement for 1462 We’ll need to find someone to lead the adoption

IEEE Guide – Adoption of PMI Standard – A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge IEEE 1490 was last reaffirmed in December 2003; MZ: Will need maintenance this year, 2008 MZ: Will need maintenance this year, Dec. Stds. Board Meeting DL is Oct. 20 th, 08 action needs to be taken by then. The PMBOK is currently being revised We need to open a PAR to adopt the revised version Chuck has recruited Paul Diamond to chair the 2008 adoption; Paul is not yet a member of IEEE-CS or IEEE-SA JWM: ISO TMB (the highest technical body in ISO) has started a project on Project Management. This may have ramifications on SC7 – hence, on us.

Standard for Information Technology – Software Life Cycle Processes – Reuse Processes Jim Moore is handling this one S2ESC has contributed IEEE 1517 to SC7 for use in an upcoming revision of MZ: The revision of ISO/IEC was completed in January 2008 Options: (1) revise 1517 as a Guide, to include references to the material that took from 1517; (2) Repurpose to address current trends in component reuse and software asset management

21 P1644 Rec. Practice for Software Nomenclature – Software Naming Conventions for Application Software Yvette Tanious is WG chair Yvette has reconstituted her WG, and intends to move forward with this project PAR has been extended till December 2009 Yvette has submitted a completion plan, and is preparing a membership roster for her new WG

22 P1648 Rec. Practice for Establishing and Managing Software Development Efforts Using Agile Methods Scott Duncan is WG chair, but has lost his employer’s support We are trying to recruit Pekka Abrahamsson, of Finland, to take over from Scott and bring this effort to ballot Jim thinks that SC7 would also play a part P1648 PAR has been extended till Dec Once the current draft is completed, Scott plans to prepare a PAR extension request, and a PAR revision to change the title A possible new title is “Recommended Practice for Customer/Supplier Relationships in Agile Software Projects”

23 P1723 Standard for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Solution Reference Architecture Liang-Jie “L.J.” Zhang will be WG Chair; his current draft reflects the IBM approach to doing business PAR expires in December 2011 Ken Costello is the Management Board representative Ken has made several attempts to talk with L.J. to make sure the standard will be corporate-neutral Paul will try and set up a telecon with LJ, Ken, and Dave

24 P2063 (ISO/IEC 29148) Std. for Software and System Life Cycle Processes – Requirements Engineering Paul is WG chair This will become a process standard, with a template for a Requirements Specification There was a related SC7 study group, which recommended incorporating IEEE standards 830 and 1233 into a new ISO/IEC standard on Requirements Engineering We’ll establish an IEEE “shadow” working group, which could do a coordinated development effort; we’ll need to find an IEEE editor who has funding to travel internationally JWM: SC 7/WG 7 directed the editor, Mark Henley, to prepare a mash up based on 830, 1233 and other materials for consideration (ISO/IEC 29148). MZ:PAR Expires Dec

Replaces IEEE , Industry Implementation of International Standard ISO/IEC 12207:1995, Standard for Information Technology – Software life cycle processes – Software Life Cycle Processes The replacement, IEEE Std (same as ISO/IEC 12207:2008) was published in early 2008.

Industry Implementation of International Standard ISO/IEC 12207:1995, Standard for Information Technology – Software life cycle processes – Implementation considerations ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7 is revising 12207:1995 S2ESC may eventually need to either revise or withdraw – Paul says we may want to revise this against the updated JWM: Possibilities View as a rough replacement for (PAR to adopt has been approved.) Form a joint project with EIA to revise

27 P14471 Standard for Information Technology – Software engineering – Guidelines for the adoption of CASE tools JWM: SC7 revised in 2007 Jim is looking for someone to manage the IEEE adoption of ISO/IEC Carl and Jim agree that this is not a high- priority item for S2ESC; we’re letting SC7 drive this project

28 P15026 “Systems and Software Engineering – Systems and Software Assurance” This is the adoption of ISO/IEC 15026; it will replace IEEE 1228 The PAR was approved in June, 2006 SC7 is making good progress on ISO/IEC 15026; PDTR for Part 1 and a CD ballot draft for Part 2 are now available. IEEE balloting on the original draft closed in Sept with 82% affirmative response Need to submit PARs for each of the current four Parts MZ: In Comment Resolution stage since Sept 07. JWM: See notes on P1228

29 P15289 S2ESC is in the process of adopting ISO/IEC to replace , “Life cycle data” According to John Walz, a PAR was approved in April 2007 Annette is chairing the adoption of ISO/IEC 15289:2006; balloting has closed with 75% response MZ: It is in comment resolution stage as of 8/18/07. There has been no movement on this. JWM: needs editorial revision to accommodate the revision of and Annette will move the adoption of 15289:2006 forward immediately. We will pick up the next version of 15289:200x when it is available from SC7.

30 P15939 Software and Systems Engineering –Measurement Process This WOULD BE the IEEE adoption of ISO/IEC 15939:2002 It plays an important role in our S2ESC policies as a reference standard JWM: ISO/IEC 15939:2007 has been published S2ESC has initiated a PAR for the IEEE adoption of the ISO/IEC document; the PAR is on the NesCom agenda MZ: PAR was approved at the Sept Stds. Board meeting MZ: Is in Comment Resolution stage as of 5/25/08, has 20 comments that need resolution.

31 P16326/ Std for Software Engineering -- Project Management This is a coordinated merger, with SC7, of IEEE and ISO/IEC Mark Henley is ISO/IEC project editor Mark is resolving comments for the ISO/IEC FCD and preparing the FDIS ballot IEEE ballot closed October 4, 2007; both of the 75% criteria were met MZ: In comment resolution stage as of 10/5/07. Sent reminder to Mark 7/7/08, he mentioned being ready to recirc. in a few weeks. Jim: ISO editor may prepare ballot draft (first through the PSDO process)

32 P ,.2 Information Technology – Service Management – Part 1 (Specification) and Part 2 (Code of Practice) Adoption of ISO/IEC :2005 and :2005 Terry Doran is chairing these IEEE adoptions; she plans to create mappings to related IEEE standards S2ESC has a set of reference processes for software and systems engineering that is shared with SC7 Sharing this material permits IEEE and SC7 to write compatible standards JWM: However, it is not clear that the SC7 working group for ISO/IEC is willing to use these processes. MZ: PAR Expires Dec Bill Powell is in discussion with IEEE-SA on how we might proceed in this area

33 P24748 Replaces IEEE , Industry Implementation of International Standard ISO/IEC 12207:1995, Standard for Information Technology – Software life cycle processes – Software Life Cycle Processes – Implementation Considerations Jim Moore is WG Chair IEEE will adopt ISO/IEC as a replacement for IEEE Std The effort will proceed as a joint effort with SC7. PAR is in place

34 P24765 (replaces ) Std Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology was last reaffirmed in Sept The plan is to maintain the vocabulary in a shared database We have negotiated with IEEE SA to permit public access to the database IEEE-CS has developed a web-based application for importing, editing, and displaying the definitions NesCom has approved the PAR for the adoption of ISO/IEC 24765; we’ll let expire SC7 FCD ballot just completed. FDIS ballot scheduled for November. At that point we will open a PAR for IEEE adoption IEEE CS is maintaining database. Need to format to match ISO/IEC publication format Need to plan for how this will be maintained and kept current

35 P25010 Software Engineering – Product Quality – Part 1: Quality Model IEEE adoption of ISO/IEC 25010; replaces This standard is a taxonomy of quality factors SC7 WG6 is continuing to revise this ISO/IEC standard; it’s now in Working Draft status Jim has written a “help wanted” ad to recruit more participants for this project
