in Great Britain

Easter is the most important Christian festival in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is a celebration full of folklore, tradition and dishes.

Maundy Thursday – it is the day before Good Friday when The Queen hands out Maundy Money – small silver coins. People can use all Maundy Coins when they do the shopping.

Good Friday – it is the Friday before Easter when Christians remember the crucifixion of Christ. That day in the tradition of family meals the meat is replaced with fish. All shops are closed except for the fish sellers and bakeries which sell Hot Cross Buns.

Easter Saturday – known as Holy Saturday, in the past it was a day of prayer and fasting. Now it is sport and family day.

Easter Sunday – the day when people celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Common tradition of that day is giving each other chocolate eggs. Eggs are the symbol of spring and new life.

On Easter Sunday every child looks for chocolate eggs hidden in the garden.

Easter Monday – few religious ceremonies take place that day, but there are many entertaining events. This is another great day of sport, horse racing and football matches. On Easter Monday families go on a trip at the seaside.
