Definition A network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves to escape to free states and Canada with the help of aboitionist.

Terms Station Master People who hide slaves in their homes Passangers Slaves Stations Hiding Spots Conductor Guides

Harriet Tubman Most famous conductor She made 13 trips to the south to help slaves She helped free over 70 slaves.

Fugitive Slave Law Declares all runaway slave captured were to be returned to their masters. Officials who did not arrest the slave could be fined $1,000. Those who helped runaway slave could be fined $1,000 and up to 6 months in prison.

Signals Lanterns identified safe houses. Songs-Slave masters thought they were religious but most of the time they had meaning. Quilt-Patterns depicted different things North Star – Follow the star to freedom Sailboat – Body of water ahead or boat use.
