 LOLELE  Lolelor Carnival is one of the oldest traditions of Transylvanian Saxon. Given its origins in the Middle Ages, the event took place hundreds of years. Custom "lolelor" – “Urzelnlaufen” in sazon dialect, attested in the XVII century and originating in the city Agnita, vanished along time with the massive emigration of Transylvanian Saxons in Romania.  This custom, initially Saxon, includes medieval guild traditions, presents traditional crafts, symbolizes the expulsion of winter, in a humorous context, refined, passing into a new year. The project, has proposed revitalization of the carnival, adding a blast contemporary and the conditions necessary for the perpetuation of tradition of the ethnic groups inhabiting the region.

 At Lolelor Parade the traditional characters are faithfully reconstructed, guild rank and dances strictly prescribed by tradition. Parade of about 100 masked characters will be on city streets. In their journey, lolele attract audiences in a traditional dance, and participants receive as a reward a donut.

The Legend of the Lole The name comes from « lallen » - to stammer, which refered to the way people spoke from under a mask, word used only in Romanian language. Etymological, the saxon word “Urzeln” could not have been translated

 It is said that the origin of the word „Urzeln" came from the clothes made from textiles remains, which in saxon idiom from Agnita meant Urzeln. Another way of explaining the name of Urzeln has its origin in a spoken legend.  It was said that this custom started in the Middle Age, in the XIII th century, while the Turkish hordes were attacking the small saxon village. The villagers, frightened by the distructions made by those, found refugee in the fortified church, killed by frequent attacks, by famine and diseases.Few of the men who had lost their courage prefering slavery than a certain death, rushed to open the fortress’ gates. Seeing that, the girl of a furrier, Ursula, dressed in a man’s costume made of white cloth on which there were sewed black patches. On the back there was a bell attached, a whip in her hand, her face being covered by a demonic mask.

Dressed like this, full of courage, Ursula came out in front of her enemies, crackling the whip and sounding her bell.. The Turkish, frightened, thinking that she is the devil itself, got scared and left the fortress. This way the fortress was saved. To remember Ursula’s To remember Ursula’s act of courage, people celebrate this day, people celebrate this day, known as Urzelntag
