Energy Continued: Turbines TOC and new page Warmup: Write what you know about how a turbine or generator creates electricity. What don’t you know? What info are you missing? Today: Two generator activities.

How can you use washers and a motor to generate electricity? See materials… 2 minutes: silently brainstorm on your paper Without talking pass your paper to the right. On the person’s notebook, write one question or comment you have. Pass to the right again. Write another question or comment. Pass one more time.

How can you use washers and a motor to make a light bulb light? Oldest person on team will lead the conversation. Youngest will record ideas on whiteboard. 1. Answer the question as a team: What will be our initial design? Sketch on whiteboard. 2. After teacher approval, try your design. 3. Record observations/results. 4. Move on to reading when done.

“Modern Wind Machines” 1. Read article. ! Interesting ! Interesting ? I don’t understand * Important point 2. Write a simple explanation of how a wind turbine works.

Teacher Notes This is edited from CS lesson 4-3 Assumes that Chapter 4 was not done.

See Cartoon, p.225. What will happen if the magnet moves inside the wire? Materials: Cu coil Cu coil Magnet Magnet 2 alligator clip wires 2 alligator clip wires Multimeter Multimeter

Multimeter setup… Multimeter setup… Hook clips to multimeter and copper wire. Hook clips to multimeter and copper wire. Move magnet Move magnet in and out. Record Recordobservations.

Demonstration Hand-crank generator. Ideas on how the electricity is generated? Where does the electricity come from? What types of energy transformations? Does the output energy equal the input energy?

Turbines & Electric Motor

Exit Slip, Application How could you use either of the following resources to move the magnet or Cu coil in a generator? Include a diagram in your answer. a)moving water b)wind
